VO-BB - 20 YEARS OLD!

Ok - I have a hankerin' to build me one of these filters/backstop deals

But their design looks cumbersome & heavy and the price ($300) is steep for what you get. Here are the layers in this sound-absorption sandwich:

* 1. Punched Aluminum for diffusing sound waves
* 2. Sound-absorptive wool
* 3. Aluminum Foil breaking up lower frequency wave-forms
* 4. An air gap acting as an acoustic barrier
* 5. More sound-absorptive wool
* 6. Another layer of punched aluminum
* 7. Four formed panels of state-of-the-art specialist acoustic absorptive material separated from the main unit via a small air gap.

I have, what I think is a better, lighter design - but I'm curious about which "layers" I actually need - and which (if any) might be overkill. Anybody have an opinion?

A noble endeavor inspired by the true spirit of thrift and enterprise. I applaud and encourage you.
Further research into that particular system will reveal that the sum of its parts are designed to work in synergy to establish a "sweet-spot" for the particular mic. Reviews state that by carefully positioning the filter's various brackets and braces, ambient room noise is truly diminished.
A search of the various companies that manufacture similar larger acoustic panels may be the key. Some of these panels are also designed with acoustic sandwich construction.
Hurry with your research and development 'cause I'm using the "chunk-o-foam" approach sort-of-like illustrated above, and it don't work worth poop! Wink

So far my design will cost about $6, if I count the stuff already laying around my garage. That's using 1/2 the material. IF I double it and include the air barrier I could be pushing $20. Money, obviously, isn't the issue. Do you think it's worth the time for what it will add? Maybe another 2 hours.

I think Willie is right. If you're only 2 hours from completing your prototype, it seems sensible to finish it. I'm interested to see and hear how it comes out.

You know, the aluminum with holes may be the trick for ADR. Like the full-wrap graphics on commercial vehicles. The vinyl on the windows has lots of little holes and you can see out from inside. ( I don't think window screen will be effective. I know you were thinking that! )

I'm with you, Bob. Actually the screen comment was for me. I have a buddy that put window screen in the back window of his Escalade pick-up so he could open the sliding rear window and keep the dogs in and the mosqitoes out.
