Balky,

If you'd like further information about Jowillie's suggestion, you'll find a review by one of your forum members, Edo, if you click here.

Going back to your original post, the computer noise was giving you problems. This means you want isolation versus treatment, the difference being that you want to control the AMOUNT of sound versus control the TEXTURE of the sound. A properly designed and built booth will give you that. Door panels will not. Sound is like water and it will pour through any opening. The best thing to do regarding computer noise is to either move the computer out of the room, move yourself into a booth or a closet, or build a box that contains the computer in order to isolate the noise. The box is a not always a good idea in that, unless you build a ventilation system within the box, heat generated by the computer will build up and possibly crash your system. That's nasty. So the solution to that is to build ventilation into the box. But now you've made an opening and sound will escape. Hmmm. We're back to the beginning.

The thought may be to make the computer quieter. Cooling fans are the noise culprit in most cases. So the temptation is to put in quieter fans. Well, been there and done that and it helps a little. But it's not ideal. Plus, the quieter you get the computer, the more you begin to detect other noises. This is because the noisy computer was drowning out other pesky noise. But, I digress.

When seeking a solution, make sure you identify the problem. Is it keeping sound out of your recordings (isolation) or your recordings sound boomy or have too much echo (acoustic treatment) which warrants an investement acoustic foam, bass traps or broadband absorbers, to name a few. Plus, the dimesions of the recording room come into play. But, again, I digress.

You have to look at room acoustics as two very different problems. Best of luck in choosing a solution.

Steve

Balky,

I just received the December issue of the Commercial Voices newsletter and in it is an article by Harlan Hogan regarding "The Harlan Hogan Porta-Booth" which you will find interesting.

Oh boy.... look how many of you replied!

I looked at that porta box... 15x15" unfortunately, that won't work as my mic is not gonna fit in there probably. It is a big ass mic LOL ...... rode nt2000.

But the idea is good and not expensive.

I started looking for doors already to make that booth Smile doors, tiles, carpet and... mmm whatever else was there.

I thought, I would put in wheels from swivel chair there too, so I can move that thing. I will make 4 doors or even 5 , and it will be a little booth without the top Smile

Thank you all for ideas... now I have my brain working Smile

My goodness. I've received over 600 hits to my website from this forum so I thought it was time to write something in response.

The idea for the Rubbermaid Shed wasn't mine although its brilliance does remind me of my own at times (pats self on back). Another voice talent passed the knowledge onto me many years ago. I have since retired the Shed and it's intact and for sale. No shipping though, pickup only and yes you can see it before committing to buy it.

I'm just outside of Pasadena, CA if you wanna swing by and look at it in pieces and make an offer.

Regarding it's aesthetics and sound dampening ability.. It's quite dead inside by design, the proximity is close when seated on a 32" barstool but with the bass trap one can really deliver a focused read. Anymore info needed, lemme know.

Meanwhile, here's what I replaced it with:

Woohoo!! I've got time today to shoot some photos of the booth. Here's an audio sample from inside I cut recently for someone interested in getting their own.

Brian......H2 recently submitted an article in our CV Newsletter on his latest recording gizmo. I've seen it in use in his hotel room in Quebec City....(I had to show him where to get great French Onion Soup) Pictures are at the bottom http://www.commercialvoices.com/Road%20Warriors.doc
This weekend he will no doubt be bringing it along to my hometown Ottawa, Canada. We have the world's longest skating rink in operation here now (7km) and H2 just has to give it a go Laugh

Cheers,
Rick
