Posted: Mon Feb 19, 2007 2:34 pm Post subject: Mp3 Audio "skipping" -- any ideas? |
|
|
Hi, i have a talent house reporting that audition mp3s they've been getting
from me consistently have a "skip" - a drop-out of audio as if a bad edit was left in- which upcuts a word or two depending on where it appears but generally, it is near the top, at around :03 to :05 in. The rest of the file is clean. No other client has reported this, and I have used this combination for years.
For audition stuff I happen to use Peak in Mac OS 9 and SoundJam mp for conversion. The oddity here is that playback on my end reveals no problem,
yet the file has the glitch upon playback on their end. Stranger yet, they
are Mac based and running OS 9 also. Given that, I'm stumped. Rate is usually either 128 or 192 for audition reads and again, no other recipient is hearing this problem (or they aren't reporting it). Any Ideas???
Thanks!

May we hear a sample of an "offending" piece?

Yes...if you can ignore the hideous schmaltz read-- (this is just something i rattled off for Test and asked to have sent back, to hear what they were talking about)
The offending audio (aside from goof read) is the drop-out at about 3 secs in... The original :20 or so file, both .aif as well as after-conversion to mp3, on MY end, has no drop-out. _________________ Mikey ... Vox-Versatiliti

I hear a drop out around the word "waterfront". It sounds almost like a bad edit. If it helps I am using Quicktime for playback on my Mac Pro.
I also booted up XP in Parallels and it has the same problem both with the Flash mp3 player on the link you provided as well as with the downloaded mp3. You may want to try and sending them the audio via uncompressed .wav or .aif but in a zip file so it performs lossless compression to see if that makes a difference. |

Rich, yep, that's where the glitch is. And as i say, it was clean w/ no drop-out
on this end --both as an .aif and .mp3 converted-- upon quicktime playback here, prior to being emailed. This is the file they sent back to me.
I was also able to email the original to myself on a laptop and on PB, it was unflawed. SOmething isn't "computing" --and it certainly looks to be on Their
end... (but what...?) _________________ Mikey ... Vox-Versatiliti

No, It's not just on their end--it's also on OUR end too.
It is definitely a drop out of the word waterfr... . The wave form is cut off.
There would be lots of technical possibilities to diagnose if you could hear the problem on your end. That's weird. _________________ Wild Willie Edwards

If you can put the uncompressed version of the file up on that site you used before and I will give it a listen. If the problem occurs on an uncompressed file then you know it isn't any compression causing the problem. Does the application you use bounce it from one format to another or does it save it natively? |

JoWillie - Yes, I too, hear the flaw/drop-out in the file that they SENT BACK to me....BUT, that file BEFORE being attatched/sent to them, plays back clean...(and that's both with and without mp3 conversion)
That's the mystery of it.
Rich, out of studio and just checking email for now but if i can, will post the initial file Tuesday sometime and let you know. Thanks for your help guys.

re: your question, in this case and most others, I'm not converting to mp3 directly from Peak. Normally save file first as .aif, then convert it using SoundJam MP. (forerunner of I-Tunes)
fyi, and thanks again,

You'll have to find out what "they" are using to playback the file and go from there. Sounds like "they" might have a player who's codec is not compatible with the type of compression scheme you're using. Basically there are 2 types of compression schemes for lossy conversions.
1.Lossy Transform- which takes the data and chops it into pieces and transforms into a new basis space and then quantized(guessing a wide range of values).
2.Lossy Predictive- previous and/or subsequent decoded data is used to predict the current sound sample or image frame. The difference between the predicted data and the real data is then coded and quantized.
All in all it sounds like their player's codec can't decode your compressed file accurately.
