In what way does removing my link improve the quality of service Voice123 gives to me the paying customer?

It doesn't. But a reciprocal link from your website back to V123 helps them increase their search engine rankings, thereby increasing your chances of getting work through them. Or so the theory goes...

Also, what if you linked back to porn, or were a spy and linked to Voices.com? Basically anything with the V123 name on it, they want to have some modicum of control over. I can't really blame them....

Jeff, thanks for pitching in to the debate

A link to my site gives them credibility - commercial value to their site, not mine. In checking my link it was easy to see that the site to which the link took visitors was in no way improper.

I pay them, they do NOT pay me. Everything on my page should serve to my gain not theirs. One can't blame them but that's not the same as permitting them to serve their own ends at my expense.

My aim is to get every cent of value from my $195.

I have to agree with Philip here. I think that forcing a reciprocal link leaves a bad taste in the mouth. Especially when we're paying for the exposure and opportunity to audition for public leads.

I haven't read the fine print, but if V123 includes anything about a link to your personal site as being part of the package, then this isn't good. If it is something you can get even as a non paying member then I guess it's ok. But I still think it is a bad idea to force it when someone is paying money for their listing.

Anybody with a free listing can get a reciprocal link if they want one.

ok then I see no issue with it, but they really shouldn't make a stink about people linking their personal site from their profile. That's just bad juju imo.

I wasn't implying I agree with their decision or would choose that course of action if I owned V123. Just sayin' I can think of reasons why they'd want more control over where external links go.

I can see your point Jeff. But if the link is to your own personal site I don't know why they should have an issue.

It must also have something to do with forcing the client to contact you through their system. If we were paying them a commission on projects they brought to us - then I can understand them wanting more control. But we don't.

Maybe this is something to ask them at the conference this week.

You know every time we discuss the pay to play sites the same thought keeps popping up in my head: They aren't here to make me money, they are here to make themselves money. Ergo, what's in my best interest is not necessarily in theirs.

I think Connie's got the best answer here. I don't agree with it per se, but I can totally understand why they'd want to ensure that the client kept going through them, even for repeat work from the same talent.

I see their point, they must do what is best for them but not when I'm paying for it. The reason I posted the email to me was so it could be seen that the argument was "quality control". Nothing on my page lacked quality. Plenty on Voice123 lacks quality, issues they've been asked to address time and time again to no avail.

This is purely a business thing. I am on that site to enhance my business and make at least my money back. Anything they do which is at odds with my intentions as a paying customer will result in a kicking.
