This is the first time I have ever heard of this. Am I out of touch? 20 + minutes of a television newscast done by a voiceover talent from out of town?

Saw that too...I asked them how often they're going to need it done? Once? Every weekday? Every day? The fact that the "work hours" are listed but the above question isn't answer was a bit confusing to me. But that's just me.

Off the top of my head I am thinking it might be Cablevision,

They do a 24 hour news thing, that has gotten very frustrating to watch over the past few years. I wont go into great detail, but consider a "weather on the ones" where you might get the current temps but no forecast, a satellite pic but not forecast. I think they do give a forecast, but I have never watched long enough to find it.

A lot of their stuff is pre-recorded. I love "live shots" in daylight at 10:15 p.m. maybe in Anchorage, but not NJ.

they've probably laid off reporters, the desk sends a cameraman out to get b-roll, and a producer writes the entire newscast, and they get a voice to play reporter.

I think they just want someone reading topicals, promos, etc. and they are saying that it should take no more than 20-23 minutes a day of time (in total) to complete. I don't think they're suggesting an off camera VO talent reading the news. At least, it sure doesn't make sense if they are.

'Could even be a version of the news scripts for their website, podcast, or RSS feed.

It says "record news scripts" - so perhaps Dave is right about podcasts or some other medium. But why wouldn't they use audio from the original story for the TV station. Union contract? Or Bill could be right about having no actual reporters on staff.

I'd really love to know the answer to this one. Veddy strange indeed.

Connie,

I think this is where the term "re-purposing" pops up. They may choose to go outside to save having to pay union through some loophole in the contract/arrangement. Or, they may have a single-market dual-ownership they have to work around. Or, they may be a station group distributing to their member stations from a central feed point. Or they may have a contract to produce a separate newscast with an independent station in the same market.

Hey, I have an idea! Let's ask THEM. ;-}

Yeah, that seemed like a pretty strange post. I would have liked to have seen it and deleted it myself. Where would I have seen this posting anyway?

It was a Voice123 post I think - or perhaps Voices.com.

I deleted it too. I delete 90% of the posts.

Was just wondering aloud (?) to my peeps...

I believe this one was on V123 yesterday. I hate it when the talent is requested "please quote". It's like asking, "please drop your pants"!
