Just wanted to share what happened regarding my recent post about submitting to some of the major market agents.
Undaunted by some of the feedback, I took a deep breath and called the first six New York agents listed on Voicebank.net
I was surprised that every single one said, "Yes, send your demo." One even said, "Absolutely" in a very emphatic way.
I sent my first six on Saturday April 21st. Imagine my surprise when Linda Weaver of Access Talent called me on Tuesday the 24th ! She asked me a couple of questions and then said she'd put my demo on her site.
Boy, did that ever make my day ???
But wait, there's more. I had sent out my second batch of six demo cd's on the 2nd May and, earlier today (Monday 7th May) not even a week later, the phone rang and the voice said "This is Naomi Kolstein of Kolstein Talent New York". I had been busy working on a very consuming project and my numb mind didn't really even register who this was. I was thinking it was a studio booking and then, I got it.
Wow ! And what a nice lady ! I had read her profile and, of all the agents I submitted to, she was the one who resonated most with me and, as I sent off my cd's I was hoping she might be interested in me. Gosh ! Gotta be careful what I hope for ! She asked me to send MP3's of my demos, so watch this space !!!
I guess I better get started on the LA agents : )

Hearty congratulations Gordon! What terrific news.

This confirms what is now my first rule:

There are no rules.

Either you have some smokin' demos or they loved your accent and had a need. Trust me, it's not that easy for everyone. So good for you. Much success to you with your new agents.

Now...off to work on my UK accents.

That is exciting news.

As Sean Connery says in The Untouchables... "And whot ahr hyoo prepaird tu doo?"

You are in Dallas. You're seeking representation from New York and possibly also LA agents.

What is your game plan when a NY agent signs you or takes you on freelance? Mp3 auditions? ISDN sessions?

I'm curious because I'm also an "out of towner" and am trying to figure out how to make it all work.

Don,
Thanks ! I don't have any specific game plan as such.
I've had my own professional audio studio for over 15 years and voice work for me is a very recent thing. But technology has changed so much. I do a very big percentage of my work with "out of towners." So, I'm quite adept at turning product around using mp3 or whatever format the client wants and can upload to my ftp site where the client will download. These days your actual location has little bearing on what work you can do. Back in ye olde days of reel to reel tape and sending reels by Fedex etc, your geographic location determined your income. Not so, today.
I concur with the earlier poster that it may not be as easy for everyone to get on with a NY agent, I was in no way saying that it was easy. It's all about having the best demo possible ( you can judge for yourselves if mine are smokin' or not at www.scottishvo.com) and there being a need for your unique talent. I think this might be a wee wake up call for those of you who have a US accent. Since the grass is always greener on the other side, it would be worthwhile considering marketing yourselves to UK agents. I can attest that people in Scotland, for instance, think that an American accent sounds way much cooler than a Scottish accent could ever hope to be. Trust me !

Congrats on the good news! Sounds like you're well on your way. I'm new here, but my guess is that once you get an "ace" contact of ANY kind that will feed you good work, the floodgates then will open.

Go get 'em!

Damn the torpedoes, full speed ahead!

Good on you for breaking the ice. I hope your success is commensurate with your courage!

Congratulations Gordon!!! I can't tell you how many times in life I've been told "you'll never be able to (fill in the blank). My attitude has been "I'll never know if I don't try." And if I don't try then for sure, nothing will happen. And yes, when I did try I was successful. I look forward to your updates.

cheers,

chrissy
