Fellow throats,

What else works?

Since 9-11, it's nearly impossible to get past the guards to visit friends at the big ad agencies. Unsolicited packages and CD mailings seldom hit their intended targets. Nobody listens to CDs anymore anyway. It's The Net or Not. I'm fine with that.

Here's my query.

When it comes to marketing we have personal websites, agent's websites, auditions, gigs, word of mouth, goodwill, repeat business, signing with multiple agents in various markets and taking out ads in the trades, but what other kinds of marketing do you think actually work today?

This issue has been discussed quite a bit, even recently.

Snoop around in the recent archives and see what's there!
I'm sure others will chime in anyway, but it's always worth a look in the posts that have gone by.

I'd say with some of the national gigs it appears that you have pulled down Pat, you should be telling us....or at least me Smile

I'm not sure that people/agents, ad agencies don't listen to CDs....they just don't listen to ones that have titles writen on with a sharpie.... in a cracked case, if you know what I mean. People can tell who the individuals are that care about their craft and their image. That goes for any line of work though.

Pat,

The only two things I'd add to your list, at least that I'm doing: I blog about voiceovers and I take part here and on a few other discussion sites on the Internet. (But, this is the only Voiceover Bulletin Board.)

There are so many levels to this business that it's hard to pigeon hole a "sure fire" response.

For instance, I don't have ISDN and have never done a voiceover session with a studio/producer/engineer. (Ok, I did a TV commercial with McCann-Erickson for Kentucky Fried Chicken when I was in radio but that was it.)

On the old "Voiceover Cyberstation" board this was a constant thread when people were e-mailing DAT tapes across the country. Today, I narrate a television show that airs on the MOR and iDrive channels that's about to start its ninth and tenth seasons. (26 episodes a year)

I suggest to start local and work your way out of the market when beginning in this business. Yet, 90% of my work is outside of my own home state.

I have fallen for the Voldermort123 trap and done endless auditions that lead nowehere. Yet, Voiceovers is my only job and source of income for the last 6 years. This whole business is a contradiction...but in a good way. It has evolved like everything else. Like VO-BB, it embraces all levels and types.

To have a successful marketing/networking system, you have to mix your own cocktail. Find what works for you. Find the line between making sure your contacts remember you and being pushy. The more contacts you get, the tougher it is to walk that line. Getting in touch once a month is fine for some contacts and annoying for others. Seek balance, my son...

Given that you already have so much of the ground work done and are (or have been) successful in snagging national material...you have most of the bases covered.

While I don't have nearly the connections you do when it comes to national radio and TV spots - I have the following thoughts on spreading the word...

1. Work on SEO for your website so that you pop up in searches. That takes some time to figure out if you are doing it yourself and perhaps some $$ if you consider things like Google Adwords or some other pay-per-click stuff. I tried that a couple years ago and it sucked a bunch of money out of my check book. And you have to be willing to study the stats to really see how it is working.

2. And spend some time doing some digging around on the net looking for new contacts. I try to find a couple of new qualified contacts every week to add to my database. Basic marketing 101 - pre-qualify those leads - usually a phone call - sometimes a short email - depending on how the lead came to me.

3. The latest thing is viral marketing - get a MySpace page, get a NextCat page (sort of an extension of the "park your demos where ever you can find a "free" site" mantra). I had a friend bug me about getting more "friends" on my MySpace page, so I spent about a half hour the other day searching that site by Zip Code for Video Production. Ended up with at least two qualified leads out of it.

Zen marketing never fails. You take Jazz (the dog) to the beach and when you return there are messages on the answerphone and emails in the inbox.

Hope that helps
