Man, commercials outside the U.S. are so much fun. Sigh.

Hate to say it, but sometimes you just don't need it.

I remember reading something a long time ago that, quite frankly, I could be mis-remembering.

It was regarding old WB cartoons like Bugs Bunny, and I think I remember reading that one of the key animators or directors said that their goal was to make their cartoons "work" even if you could only watch with no sound or listen with no picture. If you could tell what was going on and get it from one or the other, they felt as though they had done their job, because then the whole thing together was much more likely to tell a good story and, hopefully, be funny.

(As opposed to the Hanna Barbera style where the animation was limited, with the climax of an action occurring off-camera and brought to life with great sound effects and the amazing voice work of Daws Butler and Don Messick.)

I have to say Daws Butler is one of my VO heroes. The guy was simply astounding.

About 20 years ago I went to an AFI event in LA that celebrated the work of Walter and Gracie Lantz, creators of Woody Woodpecker. Daws Butler and June Foray did a Q&A session in a little theater as part of the event and of course they did all of their most famous characters. It was absolutely magical to hear all these voices I grew up with come wafting over me from the stage. The one thing I noticed was they were both short (she looked to be 4'10", he 5'1") and they both had very thick necks, like they'd been working those muscles for a long time.

I also had a wonderful conversation with Gracie and I had no doubt who Woody's mama was. Great memories.
