OK! So most of the soundbites I use in our Freedom Radio News come from Army Generals who are better at killing than speaking. Combine that with the fact that the audio file I get back has a high pitched hiss...and you can see...I have a problem. Here is what I have to help fix the problem: Audacity and AVID. Any tips? Any other freeware that could help? Shocked

Sgt--
I've had issues recently with my mic and P popping (thinking I need a better pop filter) but to remedy the sitch of the wave, I take the plosive and reduce the amplitude, by 6 db or more. Or I use a preset called 'fade in'---but my DAW is Adobe Audition so specific to Audacity and AVID I know not. As for hiss, you may find some noise reduction preset in those, but if it's sound bites, I wouldn't worry much about it.
Rock on.

This may sound silly but pantiehose are good at reducing the "pop" in a "p"

Isaiah,

Pantyhose work, but a great deal depends on where and how you wear them. I'm sure getting the Generals to...

Never mind. Lips Are Sealed

Bob,

Very nice! lol.

Kasbah, there are a few ways to do this. I've heard one person taking a metal hanger, bending it in a circle and putting the pantyhose over the circle to make a make-shift pop reducer.

If you go ahead with that, I'd love to see pictures of the General's faces!

Easiest solution. Better mic technique. Don't talk directly into the mic, talk across, above or below it. Smile when talking, that will reduce it as well.

Pantyhose comes in a close second though.

alrightee then, if you're talking about a preemptive strike, then a windscreen or some kind of pop filter will work. but if there's no quality control in the field (presumably where the Generals are being recorded), you can make said sound bites a little better in post.

I only use Adobe Audition, so I don't know if this will work for you. But can you see the waveform in spectral view? If so, you'll see that there is a hot spot at the very bottom of the screen with every popped P. You can draw a little box around just the hot spot and use 'fill single click' noise reduction preset, et voila! It's as if the P were never popped with no loss of the good P sound!

I don't think I painted the proper picture for you....These Generals and top ranking civilians are live on TV. You see them everyday. We take the audio off the Marrantz (s/p?) So there is NO WAY pantihose will be in use. I haven't had the time to go back to the audio mixer board to check levels. I really think I'm trying to fight a loosing battle!

Hi,
Perhaps you could try to convince them to speak across the mic's face, and voila, no plosives into the diaphram. Hope this helps.

The only thing you can try to do is de-pop 'em in post.

There is an article in the LEARN secion about pop filters— I'm talking about post-production editing pop filters.

Go take a look!

I don't know if Generals smile but I learned if you smile a bit while speaking, it can help reduce the pops. The hard part may be getting a General to smile. Smile

Kasbah,

Which wireless are you using? A Lavilier? Which brand? How is the mic placed? What are your levels for input? Which brand of wireless? Let me know more information and I may be able to help suggest a few things.

Personally, I have recorded lots of "live" audio and do a fair amount of "location recording" for film and video.

Please contact me via PM or my private email to discuss this situation at length.
