.........that was a scam? Just wondering. One showed up in my Inbox and I don't know what to make of it. Just a "Call me", a name and a phone number. I called the number, left a message and haven't heard anything back.

Yeah, had one a while back that asked for a custom audition...the script seemed REALLY odd, so I did some checking. Long story short- it was an anime fan that wanted audio of me saying these random things to use for some weird video thing that would have made me look like a fool (through the magic of editing and rearranging audio). I notified V123 who promptly did nothing about it. Shocked

Something similar has happened to me. One thing to keep in mind is that private leads are often the client cherry picking a small group to audition for the same spot. So you may be up against a half dozen or so other talent for the gig. But it is strange to get just a phone # and a "call me".....was there a company MOH on the other end of the phone # you called?

Thank you, Captain Renault. I actually did get one private lead. It was the only paying gig I got while on V123.

There was a company name, but when I called the number it was the guy's personal phone, so I looked up the company on the Web and the domain name had expired. There was also an aol email adddress, but I didn't want to respond with that until I got some feedback. It just feels weird to me.

Curiouser and curiouser. Like Kenny Rogers would say, ya got to know when to hold em and know when to fold em...know when to walk away....AND KNOW WHEN TO RUN. Listen to Kenny. He's a wise man.

I google the tel #, the company itself (and do a WHOIS as well), and in the case that a private e-mail is given, check that out too.

I've often found that people have a tendency to obscure what their real motives are when dealing with web transactions. Best to know who your client really is, IMO.

While I've been lucky with V123, I'm currently rassling with a very weird Commercialvoices (sorry, Rick) private lead. Big pay offered for a fairly simple, quasi-hynosis read (and, Lafontaine knows, putting people to sleep is my voiceover strength), but now the client wants to send me a cheque from his client for three times my voiceover quote and then I'm asked to SEND HIM THE DIFFERENCE! He maintains it's because from his base (Israel) and his customer's base (the UK), USD cheques take too long to clear.

To add to all this murkiness, my audition was - according to You SendIt - never downloaded on their side. But, of course, they profess to love my take.

I'm flushing it. Something's rotten, though I can't figure the scam.

Robert,

Jsut do not send any money UNTIL the check clears your bank... NOT BEFORE. Tell them it may take a month or two to get the check cleared (you have to make a little interest, don't you?)... and do not by any means spend any of the money from the check. Open a seperate account at a new bank to hold the funds, do not use your regular account.

This is the latest in internet schemes... I just got offered $100.000.00 USD to put the money in my bank and immediatly send them the difference...

I politely told them I would wait until the check clears before sending any overage funds, and I will not put any money "up-front" to get their money either. They need to pay the freight - FIRST!

The VO community has hit the big time... we are being preyed upon by the scammers.

Thanks, Fred.
Obviously, I'm still a small-time mark...mine was $1,700 for the project and a $5,000 cheque to me. I was to send them $3,300 when the cheque cleared.

I'd be honoured to be a $100,000 mark.

I politely declined, and offered to do exactly half of the project unpaid up front, and the remainer when they had all their 6-10 week high-finance juggling settled and their $1,700 final cheque had cleared my bank.

But - financially dizzy as I am - I cannot see their advantage, other than laundering small amounts of money.
