Hey, Jeffrey, I'm all for changing copy if I have a word that I stumble on. What do you do with professional copy; change it to something easier to pronounce, or trudge on?

I had an industrial training narration for a flooring client...it was about bamboo flooring. After about 20 minutes of saying the word "bamboo" in every sentance I lost it. It didn't sound like a word anymore. My 10 year old came into the studio and asked what I was doing...I just kept saying "Bam-Boo...Bamboo....BAM-boo...bam-BOO....is that how you say it?Is that a word??". My son and I got laughing so hard I needed to take a break and regroup before I could say Bamboo again. It doesn't happen often, but I hate when there's one repeated word throughout a narration...it always ends up sounding wierd.

A word like "grasps" is not easy to swap out.
"Seizes"? too rough.
"Grabs" doesn't do it.
It also depends on context. Is your hand or your mind doing the grasping?

If it's client-approved and I'm recording on my own, I always read copy word for word.. It can sometimes take a lot of out-loud practice to get the fluency down if the wording is difficult. I'll enclose alternate takes just in case they are amenable to changes.

If I'm in session with the copywriter present and there is awkward grammar, I respectfully suggst alternatives.
At CBS, we quite often make wholesale changes to sentence structure while doing the production since writing skill isnt terribly apparent in a preponderance of the sales staff— and the awful thing is most of them never know the difference.

Unless the copywriter/client is there...you trudge on.

the other day I was recording a script, and about the middle of a sentence was the word "favorite"......normally that word is no problem at all....but every time I got to that word on this occasion it kept coming out fave-you-rit. I couldn't say it right to save my life....even saying it deliberate and slow it was wrong. I took about a 15 minute break and miraculously it was back to being a non-issue word....no problem. Weird

Having spent most of my childhood on a cotton farm outside Lubboack, TX- there is a large array of words I mispronounce. All the years I was at Radio disney- the production staff used to tease me relentlessly anytime I said something wrong [ie...Greenwich Village pronounced Green-Witch]. They kept a collection of my 'outtakes'. Most of which included one more syllable than they should have!

For some reason, when I'm in a studio in front of people- I tend to do ok, but at home, in my own world, the word that gets me is 'for'. I have to consciously say the word several times to not say 'fer'.

I have the same issue - sort of - with the word "to" - comes out "tuh"

I started using Pat's advice & changing any "to" & "for" into the NUMBERS "2" and "4"...it really works!!!
