I'd guess $100 an hour.

Wow. I wasn't thinking that much. I'm a production director at a radio station - you need to talk to my boss! Def. not getting that much there lol.
Guess the next question is how to time / bill it. Say I start working on the session at 9am and finish up around 9:30, do I charge 50 bucks? Or like the folks at the auto repair shop the full 100?
Also... What would be good guess on a flat rate of a :60? I've never worked with "professional" studios before so I appreciate the help. Oh, one final question. Rates are the same regardless of the medium (tv, radio, internet)?
Thanks!! |

Your radio boss would go nuts because in radio we want the bare minimum. 99% of the time a hastily recorded voice over an overused music bed with no mastering will suffice. Quick and dirty.
Two ways to go here. You can charge by the piece or by the hour. In our area you might be better off looking at around $50 to $75 an hour unless you've really got great production chops. _________________ Hart Voice Overs Blog

Thinking about it a little further.. how a good a friend is it? I'm sure there will end up being multiple revisions and tweaking. If it's a friendship you want to maintain you should probably just figure out a modest set price and think of it as a professional courtesy. _________________ Hart Voice Overs Blog

Depends on the friend, but if I block out an hour of my working day to do a job, I charge for that hour....after all I could have been working for someone else.

Can't help with the rates in $s but I certainly charge different rates for different media.
I do this to feed my babies and while I will do occasional 'goodwill' jobs, its a ful time business and I charge accordingly for my professional services. Most clients don't quibble over a few £s or $s, if they do then I suggest to them that they check other studio rates and compare. Usually they come back.
Hold out for the money. Its a reasonable professional way to do business and it shows clients that you are not dabbling in this industry.
By extension it also helps other that your client may contact, the client will know what they should expect to pay. _________________ www.davidmonteath.com

$100 per hour (plus or minus $25 per hour) with a one hour minimum is a fair range. Many charge "needle drop" fees on production music ($25 to $100 per cut), SFX are usually free, and there's usually a charge for CD copies, say $7 a pop.
Top flight studios here charge $180 per hour, but they offer cappuccino and frozen margarita machines, plush seating, and electronic toys and games to play with while you wait. All I got is bottled water in the kitchen fridge and a couple of dogs to pet so I charge a bit less than they do.

Maybe you could raise your rates a smidge if you added a cat.

ah, we are all wallowinging in a world of marvellous euphamism.
There should be a training center for such fabulous frog thowing cats.
The Founder - Mr Banks, has been very quiet on the subject, perhaps he should advise us.......speak Oh Great One......awake Banksey Magnus. _________________ www.davidmonteath.com
