I really don't believe this, I don't. I just recorded a sponsorship tag for one of my stations. I actually had to say, "And don't forget the phrase that pays..."

I'm still laughing. I love small market radio. From the quaint clichés to the Sunday morning swap meet programs, it's a delicious slice of the American pie.

Anyway, it made my day.

The running joke around here...about 14 years ago..was that I was going to call the local country stations Sunday Morning Swapper with:

"Two children. Will trade for a riding lawn mower in running condition".

ok - floodgates are open: 1: "two boys suits" was a real lady that called EVERY week - advertising the SAME two suits. (b) i did that show for years on AM - i had one old lady trying to describe the wheels she had for sale, and not doing a very good job, when her husband screams in the background ... "tell him it's a ***DAMMED CHEV-OH-lay!" i loved the "country store" ... it's the one thing i radio i miss.

There's an AM here that does tradeio on Sunday afternoons and I listen quite often.

One of my favorite small stations is on Lake Martin not too far from Auburn, Alabama. I used to own some property near there. Anyway, this station had no format really. Depending on who the jock was it might be country, or classic rock, or CHR. It was usually oldies on the weekends when the tourists would come to visit. There was a 30 minute fishing report every morning and if I recall correctly there was some sort of show for the local farmers on Saturday mornings too. The GM was the morning guy and the sales force. That station came up for sale a few years ago and I really thought I might buy it. Then I came to my senses.

My second radio job was at a station like that. 1490 WIKE in Newport VT, 9-miles from the US/Canada border. Started out with Country and farm reports in the morning, turned in to AC/MOR in the midday and afternoon and then morphed from Top 40 to Rock with me at night. I was also reading news and signing the station of at precicely 11:21:30 every night...unless the Red Sox games ran late in the summer. I was 19.

The owner/GM/GSM sold on the streets as did the station manager along with the morning guy and one other PT sales person. Everyone did production.
The station manager, Bill Graham, was the uncle of Aerosmiths Brad Whitford. I was welcome to play all the A-Smith I wanted at night.

Wonderful little station..great memories!

"Phrase that pays" isn't as phased out as it probably should be. It's still being used as an ongoing contest at the ABC affillate in Grand Rapids MI. And also here in Columbus on Mix 97.1. Whoever coined that contest name should have set up usage rights and royalties!

The Phrase That Pays reminded me of my time at KUPD in Phoenix many moons ago. Chuck "The Chucker" Browning of RKO fame was our program director and he had a mean sense of humor. We were doing a Phrase That Pays promotion and EVERY ONE of the numbers he gave me, "randomly" selected from the phone book, was attached to names like "Mildred", "Millicent" and "Ethel", and lo and behold EVERY ONE of the contestants I called was a little old lady, and every time I called one I had to go through this grueling process of explaining who I was and what I was doing, trying to make it Top-40-radio exciting.

"Millicent Dunwitty, do YOU know the Phrase That Pays!"
"What dear? I didn't quite hear you."
"Millicent, do you know the 98KUPD Phrase That Pays?!! If you do, it's worth $1,000!"
"I'm afraid I don't understand. Could you repeat that again?"
"I'm calling from KUPD radio and..."
"Oh I don't listen to the radio much since my Edward died, and ever since my gall bladder operation..."

And these were all done live on the air. Chucker was laughing his head off for sure. Probably still is from wherever his crusty soul rests.
