I have been approached about possibly narrating an audiobook....it would be equivalent to about 250 pages.(8.5 X 11, 12 font, double-spaced) I have heard that they don't pay as well, so I was figuring somewhere between $5000-$7500 (including editing)...am I way off? Plus I am being asked about who would own the narration rights once it's complete. This is all new stuff to me, so any help would be appreciated. This is through Voice.com, so I can't really get my agent to handle these questions.
Thanks.

I saw the same audition and with a word count of 92,000, the page count would be closer to 350 pages. At the rate you are thinking ofquoting, your huigh end is $13 per page. Seems a bit low, but you've already hit the high end of this guy's proposed budget.

As well, the author would own the narration rights, unles you have a contract that specified differently.

Thanks for the input. You mentioned word count and pages:

I was figuring about 380 words per 8.5 x 11 page, then divide 92,000 by
380=242.
Are we using a different formula or is my old high school math deficiency coming back to haunt me?

I usually use:
250 words per page &
150 words per minute to record

...just as a base to get an idea of how long somethig is and about how long the finished recording will be (that's NOT how long it will take TO record and edit!)

I agree with Liz. 250 words per page. You might be able to bump that to 300, but I certainly wouldn't go any higher or you screw yourself. Or you could quote the guy a per word rate and avoid the page count stuff. Yours looks to be about 7-8 cents.
