....at 3:52am PST...
No, I didn't answer, but then it piqued my interest...who would be calling me from Chicago in the middle of the night?
I finally get up, listen to the message, and it's a nice lady calling to ask me all manner of questions about how to get started in the business of Voice-Overs.
I called her back about 12 hours later. Her name is Mary, and she says she saw my name in some advertisement on Craig's List in L-A -- an ad having to do with Voice-Overs.
I appreciate the publicity (I think), but like most of us here, I like to think I have a modicum of control over my brand, my image, my PHONE NUMBER!
I told Mary to hang out here at the VO-BB.... 'said it was the best place to start.
Mary, if you're reading this... you're in the right place.

Dave,
So the real question is: Who is posting your phone number on the LA Craig's List? (Since evidently you didn't.) _________________ Be well,

My only advice for someone who cold-calls anyone for advice at 5:52 (CDT) in the morning is to learn some business etiquette, learn the different time zones and shoot for somewhere more between 9am and 4pm locally...
But then, I'm quite the grump when awoken at 4am... That's when a phone call causes the mental Roladex of relatives who might be in the hospital to begin flipping in my head. _________________ Greg Littlefield

Weird. I checked the TV/Film/Video and Talent sections of the LA Craig's List and couldn't find you name or your phone number. Hmmmm.

Bruce,
Thanks Bruce, but I think all that proves is that I don't belong on TV, Radio or video, and that I have no talent.

I hate middle of the night phone calls... usually they're not good news. I've had too many of those. It causes sheer panic to me if the phone rings in the "off" hours.
That said, a couple of years ago, I had a fellow work colleague call my house (keeping in mind, I work(ed) from home) at around 5:30 am once. He was irate with me about something, to make it even better. Really irate. In my initial panic, sleepy haze and absolute disbelief that anyone would call me at that hour (and what the heck was he doing in the office?), I asked him did he realize he woke me up, and that I would call him during business hours to discuss. He wouldn't take that as an answer, and kept on yelling at me... needless to say, that made for a fun working relationship going forward. Wake me up, cause me panic, and yell at me. Not good for him. _________________ Caryn Clark... The Hip Chick Voice!

If anyone calls outside (at Camp Cooper anytime between 9am and midnight is OK) I just answer the phone "This better be good."
I don't care WHO it is. _________________ DBCooperVO.com

9 AM? You are more phone averse than I am!
EDIT - I read your note wrong Deebs - can we just delete this post and your response. I thought you said you DIDN'T answer between 9AM and midnight. Reading and typing too quickly... _________________ Playing for a living...

Well, consider that we take calls until midnight— you can imagine we're up for another couple of hours later than that most summer nights and anything before 9 is a wake-up call.
if It's after 7am I usually just say "good morning" but I ham up the "just woke me up"-iness of the call. _________________ DBCooperVO.com

I'm a 9am-7pm'er. I had a girlfriend who would always call at 7:45am...it took a while for her to figure out I never one time answered her call.
Since my hubby goes to work at 3am, we usually don't take calls after 7...although I've been known to make a call or two after that time. There are no phones near our bedroom...can you tell we don't have kids?
For my friends on west coast time...it can be hard to remember not to call before noon my time! _________________ Threadjackers local 420

I go to bed around 7.
We got rid of the land line years ago and keep the cells on vibrate. |

Depending on the number of time zones in which you work, the phone can always ring. Luckily, e-mail has replaced the ringing phone in my case. Typically, I'm up between 4 and 5 AM and in bed between 10 and 11PM.
However, with my mom in a dementia unit, the phone can ring at any time. |
