"Community," is the one that, to this day, can grind a read to a screeching halt. I discovered that I had a problem with it about 30 years ago, working in Bangor, Maine (WABI) and had to read "The Community Bulletin Board" twice per shift, or should I say "cah-mewn-dy" That, and "brought to you by Dick Stacy's Fuel Mart" (another Bangor pronunciation disaster waiting to happen) - someone called it "Mule Fart," one day and after that, I could never get through it without a stumble or pause, or after saying it wondering "did I say it right?"

I understand. I got the same way with a burger place in Texas named Fuddrucker's...
Didn't see you in any of these photos, so I'm guessing they're all from before your time.

Greg,
Nope, I was on the AM and sometimes booth announcer for the TV. But that mid-70's shot was something (the group shot in color) . That was the crew I worked with.

2:30pm- an audition at a local studio for a national client....the script had some big tech computer stuff in it....that I can't even remember 3 hours later...and I stumbled on almost every one. In a million years, I never should have gone for that 3rd glass of wine on the 4th...it is really costing me on the 5th...there's one I'll chalk up to 'oh well'.
4:00pm- I'm scheduled to do a character on a :60 radio. Remember the thread several months back when I was asked to sit down during a group session because of my 'high, squeeky voice'? It's the same writer...the entire spot written to my voice.
Redemption is mine! [and fortuantely this pay makes up for the audition I blew] _________________ Threadjackers local 420

Had a session today... Nevada is pronounced "Neh Vadd (as is "add" 2+2) uh" NOT "Nuh vahh (as is say "ahhhh") duh". They told me this up front before I began, and said, "... though we're sure you pronounced it correctly in the audition."
I'm sure I didn't actually... I say Nuh Vahh duh... I'm sure I did that in the audition too. Oooopppss... they must've really like my voice even though I pronounced the main topic incorrectly. Whew! Who knew!!?? _________________ Caryn Clark... The Hip Chick Voice!

There's a radio announcer here who always says TAyoda instead of TOyota and it drives me crazy.
For me it's environment (can't even type the word) and even worse, environmentally... _________________ Elaine

Here in the Silver State....anyone who says Ne-Vah-duh is immediately jeered, ridiculed, reviled, and marked as an outsider.
I've often noted, though, that this IS the only place on the planet where they say Nevada as Ne-vadd-uh.... the rest of the world says Ne-vah-duh.
The other day George Stephanopolous was mediator for a candidate forum in Reno, and began by saying a sentence with the pronunciation Ne-vah-duh, and was roundly boo'd by the entire audience.

That's interesting Dave. Is it because Ne-vadd-uh is correct or do the natives just want to be "different"?
I remember the first time I said Ore-e-gone and was quickly corrected. From that point on, it has always been Ore-e-g'n. Being from The Bay State, the only time I've heard that mispronounced is when Dan Rather used to say Mass-a-too-setts. But that another whole issue. |

When I first moved here, I pronounced the city's name as "Banger" and was immediately popped in the forehead with a large rubber stamp that said "FROM AWAY". Took me a few days of rehearsing "Bang-gore" in the car before the stamp wore off...
Steve - Very cool! That station has a long history. It was fun reading through that section of their website. I've lately found myself wondering about a good way to revive the drive-in theatre down the road from the station. _________________ Greg Littlefield

In Oregon, just TRY saying Will-a-mette' Valley (emphasis on the last syllable) and see how far you get.
The locals say Will-A'-mette. (emphasis on second syllable, short "a")
But they won't let you pump your own gas there, either....so go figure.

Hi all
Very slightly OT, but when I lived in LA in 97 I was roundly derided and by close friends too, my heinous crime.......pronouncing Sepulveda as Sepullveyda rather than Se puhl v'da.....oh boy did they make me suffer. I was introduced to people as that Scottish guy....listen to how he says this!!!!
Even now 10 years on, I can't help but say Centinela and Sepulveda in an American accent. _________________ www.davidmonteath.com
