Anybody have favorite solutions for this? I find it's starting to happen a lot. |

My "day" job causes extreme cases of this. The one thing that consistently gives me a good night's sleep is exercise. Gotta wear yourself out.
Good Monday morning BTW. |

Well, morning, anyway. My alarm goes off in 4 hours. |

I'm really sorry you're having trouble sleeping. I keep strange hours, but usually get my normal 5 to 6 hours. I can Power nap with the best o them.
Is this an isolated thing or does this happen often? I like the "wearing yourself out" suggestion. Exercise is the ticket for me. A good walk everyday can do wonders.

I come from a line of insomniacs. Exercise is seriously the best way to get yourself in the right space for sleep. Nothing like a day of manual labor for excellent sleep! but a walk will do it, for starters.
Something else I do just before bed if my mind is running great guns is I'll play a game like Bejewelled or Tabby Cat solitaire. Minor-difficulty strategy games are a wonderful way to quell the noise the myriad squeaking cogs of one's mental machinery. _________________ DBCooperVO.com

When you go to bed, scoot over to the very edge. You'll soon drop off. |

I love the disclaimer there, Bill.
The consensus seems to be for exercise. *sigh* I was saving that for a last resort... |

Yes to DB! The biggest drawback to exercise is that people don't see immediate results and quit. I remember seeing Jake Seinfeld on TV using his catch phrase, "Don't quit." That's when I started walking. I'd commit to 20 minutes around the neighborhood. Even if it wasn't far, it was something. Not fast. Just moving. Then I went longer and longer. Soon I couldn't find my way home. (rim shot-sorry couldn't resist. <g>) Then I got bored with walking after about four months and started adding a jog every now and then for a block or 2. In a year and a half I was running three miles a day six days a week and still do. That was 20 years ago.
Oh, and good running shoes are a must because they give better support.
Seriously, check with your doctor if you have any condition that would preclude this. The thing is, you can do it if I can! |

I know people hate to hear this, but you may want to look at your caffeine consumption.
As I got older, I found that even one cup of joe in the morning could compromise my sleep when I went to bed at 10PM that night.
But caffeine affects different people in different ways. Just a thought. |

BOO, HISS...
Caffeine consumption? Wow, I may have to look at that. Of course, if I have to give up my coffee, you may find that I get really irritated when people tell me things such as, "Hi."
So, now it's 11 AM, I never DID get to sleep, and I feel like a truck drove over me. Too bad school's not in session...I'd love to grade some papers right now.
Thanks, everyone, for the suggestions. I will definitely try some. Except for the jogging. I'm afraid my attempts to jog would register about 4.5 on the Richter scale. |

I can only speak from my own experience. Believe me, for a long time the thought of taking away my coffee and tea was simply out of the question. But it was amazing what a difference it made once I firmly decided to and got through the 1-2 weeks of withdrawal.
I still have a coffee or tea occasionally, just not on a daily basis anymore.
I realize such a concept is heresy to most people, especially to us ex-radio hounds who did the all-night show and make the coffee thick enough for a spoon to stand up in it.
Now I drink ginseng tea and listen to Deepak Chopra...sigh..... |

There are some great tasting decafs these days. There is about 2 % of caffeine in them. Valerian, and Chamomile teas can help. If you go to a Health food store ,and look at the teas you may find some others.
Some of us are night people. I go to sleep about 2-3AM, and sleep until 11AM.
Let us know what works. I try and arrange as many of my appointments in the afternoon as possible.
