I may be behind the curve. I was unaware, until just now, that Billy Vera --- of Billy Vera & the Beaters fame --- had been in the VO world for the last several years. He talks a bit about it here.

I, too, basically went from being in rock n' roll to being in VO. So, except for me having never had a #1 hit, I suppose Billy and I have something in common...

That's cool. Never knew he was a vo with a vo dad. I've been covering his versions of "Room with a View" and "Strange Things Happen" for years!

Wicked Small world huh?

And if you don't think you know Billy's voice, just listen to the next Burger King spot that airs. His raspy voice has been tagging their commercials for years now.

...and for those of you who are ready to reminisce, I suggest you pour yourself a nice cool glass of wine, coax your significant other or favorite pet to your side, turn up the speakers/monitors and let Billy's classic style wash over you like a summer rain...

Man, that song gets me everytime....

P.S.- There's even a nice little interview bit at the end that gives you a taste of the man's voice.

Really good article, straight to the point. Now I noticed in his demo that he uses his "money" voice ALOT, and not alot of variety. I guess that if it working for you, then push it, but doesn't that present a danger of being typecast?

Considering what he's probably pulling down with his "money" voice (it's called that for a reason), I suspect he's not worried about being pigeonholed at this point.

From the Billy Vera article:

"Persistence is a key element to success in show business. But you also have to know when you're barking up the wrong tree--when to give up and try something else. It pays to know the difference between what you're good at and what you wish you were good at."

This is the basis of my whole talk on self evaluation at VOICE 2007. And it really applies to anything that you do in life. The problem with many people is that they never are able to tell the difference.

Also from the article:

"Finally, if you don't like what's going on or if you think you're not being paid the right amount, tell your agent."

The air Billy breathes is a bit different than most of us. There is a big difference between bargaining for the big jobs and bidding on the not so big jobs.

Yes, I love it when one of my agents functions as the interface (and oddly, there has been an increase in that lately here in San Diego - had two great jobs at studios other than my own in the past two days!), but until I truly develop my signature sound and am able to get a demo that shows it into the hands of the people who cast these top dollar spots (and perhaps stop trying to be all things to all people), I probably will continue to breathe less rarified air.

This does not mean that I am not successful! I chose not to move to LA thirty years ago. And after having representation in LA for a while (despite living in San Diego), I voluntarily gave up my LA agent when I opted to take a full time job for a decade. That certainly limited the number of auditions I was going to get for national work. We all make choices.

But in order to continue to grow and progress in this business, we must understand the realities of our voices, our markets - and our marketing.

Connie, you are the voice of sanity and reasoning and your perspectives give some real insight. I like it now and I liked it at Voice 2007. Thank you. Smile
