Direct links are not always an easy download in my experience, but it may just be a Mac thing.

I can't click and download a link in an e-mail— it takes me to the source online.

I do directories so the producer can download individual cuts or a zip file of all the parts.

Showing the client a directory allows for a right-click or control-click download— it doesn't require the file to load in a web page.

I don't use passwords because it's a directory that doesn't link from anywhere, and I ask my remote producers to let me know they've got the goods, and then I yank 'em off the net.

Ben,

I truly believe that this becomes a quite individual decision. Are you concerned that anyone could have access to the direct link? Is your client concerned about that?

Some producers/agencies prefer the ftp because of product protection. However, the dance is larger to obtain an ftp'ed file. That's not necessarily a bad thing.

My alternative is one of the 3rd party storage sites. My choice is the onlinefilefolder provided by GoDaddy.

One additional thought: if I were to use the direct link method, I would certainly want to make it password-protected, which is tantamount to having at ftp site.

YMMV

I too use GoDaddy's Online File Folder... works like a dream, and it's affordable!

I have unlimited sub-domains on my site, so each of my clients has their own sub site with it's own unique FTP directory individually password protected. For the less tech savvy clients I have a default webpage that I set up on their sub-domain site and place the files for them to right-click and download.

Yeah, I just create a folder for them in my public_html directory and send them a link. They go there and see an index with their files listed and download the one(s) they want.

Like Bob, I just create a webpage for the client that no one else has access to. I upload the file and send a link to "their webpage" by email. They can visit their page and get the files.

I also have unlimited subdomains and could just as easily do it that way or set up an FTP account for each one. Right now though, the webpage for the client is working well.
