..but the voice-seeker visits my website and sees that I'm a "European-American" and turns me down on THAT basis... isn't that reverse discrimation?
Dave~ You've just hit on the reason why I don't have a picture of my mug on any of my marketing. Whenever anyone sees a picture of what I look like, they already have a preconcieved notion of what I should sound like.

I love the story Kara shared about her friend....if they had seen his picture before he opened his mouth, he would have never gotten a call for that first gig, right? Kara also made an interesting point in the CNN article..that now a days if a client wants a VO with a certain sound, they can easily find someone from that desired place with the desired sound -for real....which is one reason I've backed away from dialect work, unless they're looking for over the top cartoony sounding accents.

If you can do the voice, really really the voice, then do it....but we have to be able to self direct as well..and really know when our accents/dialects aren't up to snuff.

I really used to think I could do everything (too many Pat Fraley seminars- I thought I was invincible in VO-heheh!) I've learned to admit what I am and am not capable of. I got a call yesterday from a client that wanted a British VO for his website. British is one of the few dialects I can pull off as a character, but not as a real corporate sound. So I gave him a few names that might better suit him.

He was appreciative, asked for an audition and demo anyway, and promised to use me in the future (it's an ad agency). It pays to be honest (at least I hope it does- ack!)

I've been cast using an "Asian" accent several times: dialogue stuff for training. Young office type with hardly any accent, older uneducated, middle age educated worker with stronger accent. There was no need to have Chinese or Japanese details, just the basic placement of the sound. Also a middle aged African American woman (did that one twice to reduce the accent) and a soft spoken African woman. And one over the top Latina accent for a Mexican company marketing to Americans (I was a shrimp in a bucket).

The same job that included the African American and the African, I did at least two other accents - southern homophobe and a strident pushy middle American boss lady.

I still pass on most of the "accented" English auditions, unless I know that they are going campy or over-the-top. Ironically most of the ones I have been cast in were much more subtle. What wasn't reguired in each of them was something "specific." Cambodian, French Canadian, Bavarian.

Reading this thread reminded me that I was once booked for a commercial to do a "black" voice. This was years ago when I was first starting out in Chicago and was even more ignorant and stupid...OK...never mind, I was just young and stupid, let's say.

So, I booked this job and did the session, even though the producer and engineer were a little surprised when I showed up at the studio. And a week later I was called back in to do the session again...because? I sounded "too black"!

I've never auditioned nor accepted a similar job since. It didn't really feel completely right back then, and feels even less right now.

(And yes, the client was happy with the second set of takes. And, as far as I know, never knew my ethnic or racial background.)

By the way, Anthony, it's wonderful to see you post again!

Back in my radio days, I voice tracked an overnight (midnight to 6am) show as what today would be know as an "urban black man." I guess I must have been convincing enough since my "Ivan" persona continued for two years. No one but the station staff knew Ivan was a 22 year white kid that also did middays Gasp

Ah autumn. School days, cool days, pretty leaves, and a new season of Boston Legal.

I can't wait.
