These are the specs I have been given for a session:
- Bit rate: 128 kbps
- Audio sample size: 16 bit
- Channels: 1 (mono)
- Audio sample rate: 8 kHz
- Audio format: PCM
I use Cool Edit Pro 2.0. I understand how to set the sample size and the sample rate. The format is a PCM wav file. What I don't understand is how to set the bit rate at 128 kpbs (I know how to do that for an mp3 file but not a wav file). Can anyone tell me how to do this?
Thanks. _________________ Elaine

Sounds to me like what they may have meant was the final file has to be delivered as a 128 kbps mp3. I use Cool Edit as well and don't recall a setting for that when setting up a new session.
On another note, will the newer versions of Cool Edit or Audition save as mp3? I know my version 1.2a won't. This is why I use Sound Forge. It will save .wav files as mp3 without having to use another proggy for the conversion. |

Thanks Allen, but I think they do want a wav file as it is for an IVR system. I just don't understand the bit rate at 128 kpbs. And, by the way, version 2 can save a file as an mp3 file. _________________ Elaine

WAV files do not have a bit rate, they are not compressed. Not to be blunt, but the individual you are speaking with is wrong or was using an email template and forgot to delete a line. _________________ Genus |

Thanks Kevin, that's what I thought. I just don't know enough about it and wanted to make sure before I get back to them. _________________ Elaine

Hi Elaine,
If they (your client) are talking 128 bit, they are talking .mp3. If they are talking, 16 bit, 24 bit or 32 bit - they are spaeaking of .wav or .aiff (in most cases, there are other file formats which use the same "resolution").
You might ask the client if they prefer 44,100 kHz or 48,000 kHz "sampling rate", 16 bit or 24 bit resolution which would be converted to a 128 bit .mp3 file.
You are probably looking at your screen with the same "look" and sound the client will have when you ask that question. So here is something you may be able to compare ti with: 16 bit resolution, 44,100 kHz Stereo is what you hear on a CD - hence CD quality; further 48,000 kHz (or 48k) and 24 bit resolution is what you hear on many DVD movies with AC3 Surround Sound, some are sampled at the higher 96000 kHz sample rate. The latter are the higher end DVD's and some toher Audiofile nerds like this higher sampling rate and say it sounds cleaner - you let your ears be the judge.
So that all said, your session parameters specifically call for a specific type of file, they are calling for a mono, very low resolution - 8000 Khz file. PCM I believe is the same type of file which Connie T or D.B. was having a devil of a time being able to do. The solution is a program called "Vox Studio 3" or a very old version of CEP - if you can find it.
Oh, I do not know whay they would add the 128 bit parameter, it would not be a point in the ADPCM format which you could adjust.
Good luck.

You're right Frank.
The version of CEP I use (ver 1.2a) can save as ADPCM as can the version prior to it. I don't know about CEP 2 or Adobe Audition as I've not used them. I believe my Sound Forge can also save in the ADPCM format. |

Okay, I've gone back into CEP and there is an option for .pcm .raw files. It is a compressed format but I am still assuming the request for 128 kpbs is not an option for this. It only allows you to save as an 8 bit file. Assuming they do not want an mp3 file, would you agree that I should just ignore the 128 bit parameter? _________________ Elaine

Makes you wish there was a "Batch Save" in Cool Edit that would save one WAV File in every format and rate supported AND schedule the FedEx pickup. _________________ Genus |

Time for Genus to put on his Inventor's Hat.
The KG Plug-in.
Version 2 also makes sure the FedEx man brings you a Dunkin' Donuts coffee. _________________ DBCooperVO.com

Elaine - If it were me, I would call the client and double check, personally.
Otherwise, ignore the 128 kbps and save the highest sample rate/bit rate original as well so you can convert to other lower rate versions later if they need them.
Then tuck into a Krispy Kreme and a cup of coffee. |

Let's settle one thing before getting too far along in the CEP/Audition dream.
CEP 2.0 and Audition 1.0 and 1.5 will NOT do the ADPCM PCM .wav (.VOX) file for VOX/IVR. Only CEP1.2 or prior has this ability (it was taken away from the CEP package when Syntrillium went into negotiations with Adobe and subsequently 2.0 was released after five years of the 1.2 version).
It can be done in the VOX Studio 3. VOX Studio 3 is a little program which is DESIGNED for IVR/VOX/Phone Messaging.
Hope this helps.
