I've seen at least a few reports in the last couple of years of thieves going after power lines and substations and in the process getting electrocuted. |
www.fark.com prides itself on posting those stories since it happens so often (earlier this week some Darwin Award winners tried to take the copper from live cables THAT WERE ON A POLE ^) FT HIGH!!!).
No shortage of geniuses, is there.
As for Coninuity of Operation Plans (COOP), I'm a huge fan of using UPS, power filter, SAN (Storage Area Network), having a spare computer handy (like others I also have a lappy), and good relations with the local studios.
Then again, I'm paranoid to have a portable generator... just in case. _________________ Voiceovers by Gregory Houser

That's exactly why I'm refusing to bundle all my services with either the cable company or the phone company, both of which offer 3-in-1 packages. I'd save money, but lose out big time in a major outage.
Since my cable ISP was out for several hours two days ago I've been mulling over the idea of getting DSL or even a simple ISP service through my phone line in addition as a back up.

Somehow, I just don't feel any sadness or sympathy for them. Getting hard hearted in my old age, I suppose. |

In my town, even players like Earthlink DSL have to ride on the (red)back of AT&T. Thank your congressman. So, my only other high speed option is cable.
A local TV station is outsourcing their local newscasts to a company in another state. The reporters in my town do the stories that they upload via high speed internet to be anchored on the newscast. But the produced pieces take "gigabytes" and the TV station is using Cox Cable. Four PM is when most of the kids are watching YouTube and the upload speed crawls to nothing. I was told they missed getting three stories the other night. So, they're ording DSL to go with it.
Backups! (I want a generator too!) |
