Nasty bridge collapse in Minneapolis. Please tell me none of our voice talkers (or friends and family) were involved. _________________ Dave "Christi" Felton

I used to drive that bridge regularly... Friends and family still live near there... so far so good for us... |

I spoke with my Mom this morning. She, my brother Jon and his wife and kids and my sister are all OK. What was scary to me is that my brother lives only about a quarter of a mile from that bridge and is driving home across it right about that time every day. Thankfully, he was running late yesterday so wasn't caught in the collapse. _________________ Be well,

Some anxious moments for our family. My wifes nephew and his wife drive that bridge daily but thankfully they weren't in the wrong place at the wrong time. Reports are searchers suspect there may be more as several people are still missing. So very sad. _________________ . If at first you don't succeed, then bomb disposal probably isn't for you. |

Indeed. But the collapse of the Mianus River bridge in Connecticut in 1983 immediately comes to my mind. 3 people were killed. Quick research reveals the Hatchie River Bridge in TN in 1989, the Schoharie Creek bridge of NY in 1987, a connector span collapse of the San Fran-Oakland Bay bridge in 1989 show there's not enough oversight!
Here's a table (from 1995--eegads!) from UDOT/Federal Hwy Admin study:
Table 1 -- Status of the Nation's Bridges(1)
Bridge Inventory 575,583 (100%)
Backlog of Deficient Bridges 199,277 (35%)
Structurally Deficient 118,563 (21%)
Functionally Obsolete 80,714 (14%)
Cost to Eliminate Current Deficiencies $78B
Average Annual Cost to Maintain Status Quo $5.2B
Average Annual Cost to Eliminate Existing and Accruing Deficiencies $8.2B
Estimated Current National Expenditures $5.0B
Replacement/Rehabilitation (ISTEA) $2.7B
Other Federal-aid, State, and Local Funds $2.3B

from an AP report...
In 2005, the 40-year-old bridge had been rated as "structurally deficient" and possibly in need of replacement, according to a federal database. The span rated 50 on a scale of 120 for structural stability in that review, White House press secretary Tony Snow said. _________________ . I spoke with my father a couple of hours ago. He drives an 18-wheeler all over the country, He's in his mid-70s and has a perfect safety rating. I didn't even think about him being at home in Minnesota because every time I talk with him he's somewhere like Utah.
Anyway, he was driving South on I-35W yesterday on his way to pick up a load when his wife called to remind him there was some construction on that bridge and lanes were closed so he should get off the highway and go through the back streets.
Because of that call, he wasn't caught in the collapse. Otherwise, he would have been driving across that bridge at that moment.
It really makes you think. And I'm so glad my Dad is OK. (I was very happy to be able to tell him my brother Jon is fine, too. He hadn't been able to reach him, yet.) _________________ Be well,

Praise the Lord for that, eh Bob? It does make you think.
You said:

and you know, of course, there is nowhere like Utah but Utah itself _________________ sitting at #8, though not as present as I'd like to be. Hello!

Diane,
Yes, Praise the Lord, indeed. I'm very grateful that everyone in my family is OK. And one of these days, I'm just going to have to figure out a way to get myself to Utah so I can see for myself, just what's unique about the place. (Aside from you, Frank, and Greg, of course.) (edited to add...And Scott. I can't believe I forgot about Scott.) _________________ Be well,
