Gotta vent... Sorry.
What a day, received an offer for a great gig (that is the good part), then went to my Mothers home and began watering her lawn.
The faucet which the hos the hose attached broke in my hand (old house). I turned the water to the house off completely.
Time to call a plumber, this is not a situation I can fix myself. To have a plumber come out this evening is $385.00/hour.!
I think I am in the wrong business. I ask, "can you come tomorrow during business hours?" The plumber answers, "No, I am booked up for three weeks".
I give up... anyone know a welder... I will fix that pipe for good....
grrrrr

Tomorrow will be better and I will get another plumber. _________________ Be thankful for the bad things in life. They opened your eyes to the good things you weren't paying attention to before. email: thevoice@usa.com |

Frank,
One of my brothers is a welder, but he's in Minnesota, so not much help for your situation. What a rotten situation. _________________ Be well,

...to paraphrase mark twain describing the addition of a bathroom to his new england home: "it cost 250.00. the only reason it cost 250.00...was that the plumber didn't know i had 500.00". _________________ rowell gormon

frank - is the pipe threaded or smooth? if it's threaded and broken, you're in trouble - but if it's smooth (and you have enough sticking out from the house to work with) you can get another faucet, some solder (lead free) and a propane torch and sweat the new fixture on in a coupla minutes. if you don't have enough pipe to work with - just go back to the nearest joint and replace the pipe from there. should take an hour or less! (the last part, obviously works for the threaded pipe as well). _________________ "i know philip banks": todd ellis

Well...if you're going to go through all that trouble, why not install some "value-added" features? Once ya got that blowtorch fired up, why stop at a measley hose faucet valve? Hmmmm?
...and if all else fails, you can, as Todd says, "just go back to the nearest joint..."

Frank... I think you'll be money ahead if you just send Todd a round trip ticket to Park City.
... And throw in lunch at the No Name Saloon.

Todd,
It WAS threaded. The pipe is s-o-o-o-o rusty it literally broke off in my hand.
Going back to the last joint is the hard part part, this is an old "lath and plaster" home. They built them well in the "old" days.
It is time to replace the entire plumbing in the house, I assume. However, I guess I will start with just one pipe. Then the sprinkling system, then, the lower level bathroom...
Doesn't this sound like fun?
I guess I know what I am going to be doing for the next few - - years.

I feel for you Frank. Plumbing is my sworn enemy!!!!
I have a situation a lot like yours in that my mom's house in Oklahoma started out as a log cabin and they just built around it for about a hundred years and repairing anything in it today is an "adventure" to say the least. In fact, as someone else has already mentioned... repairing one thing usually turns into replacing an entire system. Replace Faucet = re-plumb house. Repair Light socket = rewire entire house.
May the force be with you! _________________ . If at first you don't succeed, then bomb disposal probably isn't for you. |

I'll join the chorus. I hate plumbing! Remodeled two bathrooms over the past few years. Something always leaks.
Best of luck Sir! _________________ Wicked huge.....in India.

Two things I never touch: plumbing and car repair.
There are simply some things better left to the pros.

If you are going to replace that line, I would recommend installing a cutoff valve inside the house leading to that outside faucet. This is especially good in areas that get very cold in the winter, you can shut off the outside lines so no freezing occurs. This will extend the life of that outside faucet.
Too bad you aren't closer. I could help you out. I've done some work around my own house and at my mother's house in Pittsburgh. Plumbing is a pain but I refuse to pay those insane prices.
