I go to a web site and see it has audio content so I click to play it. Another widow opens and the content loads. What should happen next is that a player starts playing, it doesn't. I get a blank screen. Any ideas?
IE6 with "Oh yes please do play stuff from t'internet enabled" duly selected. |

It depends on how they're embedding the link and what your default media player plug in is. Sometimes its windows media player, sometimes quicktime. It really depends on your configuration and the way the page is written. Send the link and we can see if we all get the same issue. _________________ Jeff

Philip........LET IT LOAD!!
I have the same issues with my site currently. I plan on converting all my audio files to Flash soon...but in the meantime---??
Help! Mr. Kafer. I would appreciate your take on how to present quick audio.
Thanks,

I use flash players on my site. Works great and I don't need to worry about who has what plugin. Plus they never leave the "experience" of my site. _________________ Jeff

I have noticed that whenever I click a link for someone's demo, it usually spawns Qicktime - which is just nifty, dandy and swell. I said "usually". Sometimes I click a link to someone's demo or a bit of audio they want others to hear - and I get a pop up box telling me that my computer can't play the file.
I have wondered why someone would have their website set up in such a way as to make it difficult for a potential client to hear a sample of their work. Perhaps this is a very clever and very leading edge marketing technique that I just don't understand. Maybe the rest of us should know more about it.
Anyone have any ideas? |

Sometimes I'll get that and of course I was prompted to load a newer version of Quicktime on my computer. The fun never stops! _________________ Bobbin Beam

Quicktime is probably your default media player. Is it the one that loads when you double click media on your computer?
Your computer probably can't play the file I suspect because it is encoded with a codec ( the compression type) that your computer can't read. Whilst not always the best it does make sense to use standard file types etc, which is why flash works. Though it's nice to have files to download and keep on file. |

I use the same Flash player Jeff uses, and I think Amy uses it as well (Thanks Jeff for that link a while back!)
It's free and works well.
On my index page I also have the Name of the file as a link to a downloaddable .mp3 if people want it.

You are correct. I have other players. They will all play the most frequently used codecs. I guess I am just so unhip that I can't possibly understand the benefit to anyone who insists on offering their demo in a form that many others can not easily access and listen to. Oh well, it ain't like it might cost 'em any business or anything. Right? |
