Amy,

Try moving the tip of your tongue to a slightly different place in your mouth, maybe a little further forward? Just make sure you make contact with your hard palate briefly while saying the letter. For me, the contact point is just behind my teeth.

I hope this helps. And please, dear lady, get some rest!

My nemesis today was "Diamond discipline business principles".

I think that one's going in my warmup list.

Exercise...

I use the suggestion from James' and Penny's book. Take a wine cork and place it between your teeth... then read out loud... and enunciate as much as possible. Take your time saying each word as clearly as possibe. Sometimes (if I'm alone)... I'll read blog posts and magazine articles to myself this way.

It sounds fabby! (oh... there's LOTS of slobber involved!)

Okay....just had four different narration scripts and I'm going to have nightmares about the word "pipetting". I could say it correctly on it's own, but in a sentence, it kept coming out every way but right.
Pipe etting
Pie pettING
Pi PET ing

Made for a verrrrrrry long session. Thank goodness for nice clients!!

Dave,
Excellent suggestion about the cork. I also use that same exercise often from James' and Penny's book but when I didn't have any corks around (not a big wine drinker and Stoli's doesn't use a cork) I found a perfect replacement. The tops of spray butter! It's almost the exact same diameter, has give to it since it's a top of something with an open bottom and I don't get bits of cork in my mouth.

For the "L" sufferers, my VO 'bible' suggests practicing the phrase, "Red leather, yellow leather". Then try it with a cork in your mouth.

My tough one lately has been, "This Summer." It either sounds very sibilant, or like thi-summer. The best sounding take came when I linked the s, but gave more breath to the second one. Suggestions?

Last night's scorcher:

"perfect free throw"

Regarding "This Summer":
Don't try to pronounce both S's, or separate them. It will sound artificial.
This summer really should sound like Thissummer.
It can sound legato, like an elide, and it's OK.

I "regularly" scoop the tip of my tongue to touch just behind my upper teeth to avoid the "Tom Brokaw Effect" with Ls.

With "digital" that's a word that I have to smile eagerly for in order to pronounce clearly. Usually, that eager smile is implied in the subtext "Hey, we're digital...whoo boy!!!" anyhow.

Smiling also works for plosive "P's". That came from Pat Fraley at Voice....that tip alone was worth the trip.
