I'm sorry, but I'm scared to buy anything used that I really, really need to rely on, like cars and computers. I don't buy new ones all the time...I run them into the ground if I can before getting another. Anything that goes wrong is on my watch, not somebody else's.
Threadjack: Speaking of NOT running things into the ground exactly, I've got a Ford Ranger I bought almost 9 years ago, and because the last 7 years I've been working mostly from home, the odometer just turned 40,000. Looks like new, runs like new. God bless workin' from home.
And God bless you guys cause I don't feel like I'm working all alone.

I don't recall ever buying a refurb of any kind. Like Bruce I tend to go with the new stuff so I don't run into any "hidden" issues AND so I can enjoy the safety of a FULL warranty period. It makes me nervous when they advertise "refurbished" or "restored" to full factory specs... but drop the warranty to 30-90 days or some such instead of the one or two years if I bought it new. I think that's the tip off the saving may not be worth it! _________________ . If at first you don't succeed, then bomb disposal probably isn't for you. |

Not from Comp USA... but from TigerDirect... kids use it now... but I used it for 3 years before buying myself a new one. No complaints.
Refurbs could be anything from replacing a floppy drive or harddrive to a sound card to a motherboard.
They're usually well tested before sent back out. _________________ Dave "Christi" Felton

I would recommend buying a refurb from Dell. They will still give you the full warranty and if their units are anything like the returns we have sent back, many times it's not even a technical issue. It's usually something like "I'm the Dean of the College of Business, so I need a faster/bigger/better machine than my counterparts so I can process email better and faster than they can and open Word in a fraction of the time!"
What ever.
Anyhow, I've known many people getting refurbs from Dell w/o any issues. _________________ Try to imagine a world where there is no such thing as hypothetical situations.

I'll chime in with Bob (God help me....I don't know why)...but I caught on to the Dell refurb line five years ago and got a couple of machines, monitors from them....they're still running.....it seemed like a good deal at the time....more computer for less money.... |

The old adage was..."New is better than used." As long as the refurbs are repaired and tested to specs... they should work fine. The greatest determining factor for a refurb would be the existing motherboard. How many improvements can be made to a computer before you're faced with the option of replacing the motherboard itself?... and if that needs replacing, would a new computer be a better choice? _________________ "Bailey"

Thanks everybody. I really want to replace my old HP Pavilion since it's about 6-7 years old at this point and slow as molasses but as my budgetary constraints are on the poverty-stricken side, I thought I'd at least consider a refurb from a reputable manufacturer like Dell or HP. I'm glad to hear that some of you have had good experiences with them.
Muchas gracias!

I look at Woot.com and Spoofee.com every day. Both very useful for buying toys at a great price. _________________ Try to imagine a world where there is no such thing as hypothetical situations.

Or, do what I did. I recently built one with 2.66 GHz Dual-Core Pentium processor, 1GB Ram, 550W power supply, DVD-RW drive, 200 GB hard drive, a 52-in-one card reader, Intel motherboard and a smokin' Geforce PCIe graphics card - ALL for under $400 shipped. I got a bare bones kit from Tiger Direct and building a box isn't all that difficult.
The system is smokin' fast! |
