It's Japanese and means "real" or "actual" in the sense of "not a rehearsal". So when a director wants move on from a test or practice read to an actual take, he'll say "honban". Some directors will always do a test read before a take. Others, like I had today, will do a "Honban Test" and record the test read and keep it if it was OK.
Still no word from the suits on that honban audition though. Still, I'm too busy dealing with the imminent birth of my second kid to worry about that!

Congrats Amy!!!
I recently went on an audition and I felt good about it. The casting director gave me a nice compliment when I left. I got a call a few days later that I was on the short list and they would know the next day. I didn't get it but they did call me to say they were going to keep me in mind for future work.
