A job on Voices.com looking for a read that sounds like a public service announcement rather than a radio commercial.
I'm trying to decide how that client wants it read. Very dry? Very plain? What do you all think? ( Or Yunz in my Pittsburghese)

You aren't trying to sell something - you're not pumped up and smiling - so much as you're trying to deliver information to people who need it - really need it as opposed to, somebody wants them to think they need it. The subjects are usually serious, which doesn't necessarily mean dry and plain - sometimes the tone is sombre, or dramatic. I just did one about the effect of second hand smoke on children. The first line was something like, "When you smoke, children smoke too." The client wanted a stern tone, almost angry.

Hope this helps.

I'm always amazed by these kind of descriptions. "National Feel", "PSA Style"...

In reality what the Producer/Director should be asking for is that the read fit the copy. Does the copy call for a compassionate, caring voice, or a happy, lighthearted read?

Look at the copy:

Quote:
If you’ve had an increase on your adjustable rate mortgage, you could be eligible for a new, lower-interest loan insured by the FHA.

President Bush has authorized the FHA to provide new, lower-interest loans to qualified homeowners who’ve experienced a reset, or rate increase, on their adjustable mortgage.

To learn more, call New England’s leading FHA direct endorsement lender right now…at 1-800-EAST WEST.

This is an "informational" spot. They're trying to say, "We're doing you a service by providing you with this information". Obviously you wouldn't use your "screaming car dealer" voice for this one.

I'd say let the copy guide your read and you'll be spot-on!

Thanks for the input. I usually try to read the copy and determine the angle when there isn't any direction but I wanted to get some feedback when presented with what the client feels they want.

It seems like I never get to use my "Crazy Eddie" voice anymore!

Insane!

I bet you could even find all those old spots on YouTube if you really wanted.

Here's a link to that PSA with the "American Indian", Iron Eyes Cody and pollution.

I remember crying when I saw that commercial.
