Hello all, I'm an audio producer in Baltimore working on a video game that is interested in obtaining some placeholder VO; which will eventually be replaced. We aren't a signatory at this time so we can't make use of SAG actors just yet (but look for my question about that soon!).

Where would you recommend looking for local voice talent? I've contacted a few local universities to talk with the Performing Arts department heads with only moderate success.

This is the place, not to be cute, but there are several VO artists on this board who are somewhat local to the Boston (correction: Baltimore) area.

With todays technology a Producer such as yourself does not need to rely primarily on local talent as VO artists can deliver your audio from literally anywhere in the world.

Check with local talent agents for non-union talent in your market or ask other local producers for their suggestions as to whom they have worked with in the past. Local recording studios are also a great contact point.

Good luck, and may I suggest - you can always contact me... LOL. Actually, "D. B. Cooper: the VO-BB founder is sort of local to you and she is an incomparable talent. Another artist here on the VO-BB is our own "MCM" and there is a bevy of other artists who drop in on the VO-BB quite often.

Frank,

the man said Baltimore... not Boston.

I'd hit the local casting agencies, but otherwise Frank's suggestions are spot on.

FWIW: I'm a stone's throw away in Philly Wink

You have landed smack on the bullseye of one of my favorite discussion points.
Using SAG actors is no guarantee of excellence; it does, however, get you access to some very fine actors not available otherwise.
You still need to be hyper-diligent in your casting.

You're best off getting actors of the caliber you'd actually use in the final recordings. That way your final VOs are able to anticipate the presence of a developed character as they work to match the voice. Timing is a big teller of excellence and class in acting.
If you want to record the scratch VO in ensemble, you might want to look at local stage actors. If you're not tied to recording locally, you have a choice among a massive number of great voice actors with home studios.

I hope we might be able to help you with your questions and projects.

More than likely, the final VO artist is not going to hear the scratch. The scratch is put in only to help the animators and designers get the right timing. And that timing is rough anyhow. Many things will need to be tweaked once the final VO is in.

You do want to hire pros as opposed to students or the tester down the hall to do your scratch. With a pro you'll get the right timing you need as newbs will probably race through the script.
