Yesterday we were working on a project that I'll be doing the VO for later this week. The on-camera person (a local scientist) had the hardest time with the following:
"... and we use it to measure the temperature and chemical composition of the atmosphere."
He could NOT say the word "temperature" to save his life. It kept coming out "temmacher"... and every time he tried to fix it, it came out worse.
After about take 10, the camera guy said, "You're slurring it ...moving your lips kinda funny.. I bet your wife likes it when you do that..."
That led to whoops of laughter, the scientist staggering around holding his sides, and it was five minutes before we all got our composure back enough to continue. On the next take, though, he nailed it. And then died laughing again afterwards. _________________ Charter Member: Threadjackers Local 420 |

When I was at my recording session for the VMAs, we had been going for about an hour. Nice steady pace, everyone focused. The came this: Herbal Essences luscious shampoos, conditioners, and styling products. Everyone saw it at the same time and just died laughing, It took me a time or two to get it. I kept saying "lusicous shampooshs" _________________ www.septembervoice.com

Today it's "Health Statistics".
(Actually, repeating it several times, as I typed the above, has helped considerably. But boy, did it ever have trouble getting out of the starting gate today.) _________________ Great Voice. Great Choice. For Voice Talking and stuff.

Sometimes the simplest words can be the toughest. Today's stumper for me was ....
wait for it....
"Earth"
I could NOT say it right to save my life -- it kept coming out "URRth" and after a while it didn't even sound like a normal word any more.
So, I finally sang it to myself as Uth... a few times and then it came out okay. Opened up that old soft palate right away! _________________ Charter Member: Threadjackers Local 420 |

It's not that the stuff is particulary hard to read - well sometimes it is, it is that I have to read it from the notes section in a PowerPoint presentation with all the screen directions inserted into the script in bold.
Don't read the stuff in bold they said...
Audio Narration (05.00.000.mp3): Welcome to the “Geographic Data Sources” module. In this module, you will learn about [“Digital data” appears] digital data, including [“Vector data” appears] different sources of vector data [“Raster data” appears] and raster data, such as [“Aerial & satellite imagery” appears] aerial and satellite imagery. You’ll also learn about the [“Scanning” appears] scanning process.
And that was a simple paragraph...
I actually love the challenge. I sent the client an email to confirm which words were part of the same phrase - and she replied in a voice mail that cracked me up. She was cracking up herself by the time she finished trying to say it. I think she got how hard it is to say this stuff sometimes!
"CFF data are used to publish 1 to 63,360 scale, 15 minute topographic quadrangle maps for USFS forests in Alaska." _________________ Playing for a living...

Here is a grand little video about how hard it can be to say something, especially if the product contains an ingredient that makes you change the script.
Click on the thumbnail in the top row called Monkey Spunk (sorry).
You will undoubtedly have to sit through an ad but it's worth it. |

Okay...today I couldn't get through "after reading section five, the brand plan's reader ..."I said "Blam pan's meader", "Bam Pram's leader"...took a few tries then did it reaaaaaly slowly a few times before I got it right and could do it at normal speed. It's a lot easier to read on paper! (thank goodness this is one I'm voicing at home). _________________ Moe Egan

It took a while (14 VO years, to be precise), but a phrase has finally wrestled me to the ground:
"unfathomable mercy".
After twelve takes over the last two days, much gritting of teeth, and oceans of Moosehead, I've finally asked the poor client to change the sentence to "you persecute me personally with that inexplicable mercy of the Almighty One."
Weird. It kept coming out as unfathonable, which is a much better word anyway.

Robert,
Is it possible it's incipient Moosehead? _________________ Be well,
