I still have (and occassionally use) CEP 1.2. Love it's speed and simplicity. I started out with CoolEdit 96...then moved up. Right now, I use Sound Forge Audio Studio 8 as my main go-to recording program. Just right for what I need. I hope to upgrade to SF9 soon. Anyone with opinions on SF9 ? Frank? |

Thanks for the info. I downloaded the trial version of AA2 two days ago and I love it so far, in comparison to Cubase and the Dongle-Hades to which I was subjected. With Cubase I had to shut down EVERYTHING on my computer and I still couldn't record large chunks of audio at a time (multitrack? forget it!). With AA2 I can have wifi and an active virus scan going and record twenty minute takes while I have five HOURS worth of mono voice open on other tracks.
Okay, so I wait till November. It will make me stronger. |

Allen,
After upgrading to Sound Forge 9, I've moved back to 8 for most of my editing work. There are a couple of things I really don't like about the way they've changed certain behaviors. (E.G.: Click down in a waveform while the audio is playing and it used to be you'd just set the cursor location; in SF9 the audio jumps to playing at the new cursor location.) _________________ Be well,

i'm with the group that doesn't like "new and improved".
for years and years, i've gotten reliable service from the old cooledit pro (one-point-somethin-or-other), and when my trusty win98 machine finally gave up the ghost, i was stuck, because my old version of cooledit wouldn't run on xp. after reading about the dissatisfaction expressed by owners of adobe audition 2.0, i thought about jumping over to vegas or sound forge.
an extensive search of the internet yielded few resources for buying a legal version of audition 1.5 (one retailer has it for almost 700.00 if you're that desparate!), but i got lucky and found a guy in california who had been given one as a gift, decided not to use it and put it up for sale in a classified for a hundred bucks. i took a chance and was rewarded with fast delivery of a complete package: box, manual and all.
i still like the ease of my old cooledit...which i'm thinking about having stuffed and mounted. meanwhile, i'll take the older 1.5 over the "new and improved".
your mileage may vary. _________________ rowell gormon

i came up exactly the same way. when i made the jump from AA 1.5 to AA 2.0 i wasn't impressed - but i forced myself to keep using it and have grown to love it. i think the GUI on multi-track is much more user-friendly, and they added some cool bells & whistles ... not that i use them very much - but when i want them - they are there. _________________ "i know philip banks": todd ellis

Simplicity will be taken care of by Adobe with Soundbooth. I haven't messed with it though since the Beta. _________________ Try to imagine a world where there is no such thing as hypothetical situations.

You really do not want my opinion on SF 9, Alan.
I own a copy of Sound Forge 9, but I RARELY use it. I have not been a real fan of Sound Forge since it's inception, so therefore I reserve the right not to publicly flog something of which I have not formed a concise realistic honest opinion.
The above stated, Sound Forge has been a good product for basic editing of audio files. Many of the capabilities of the software are very well implemented.
In my personal opinion Sound Forge is an "above average" mastering tool. For serious editing and for professional voice over production I find there are better, stronger, and easier to use software products on the market for a lower or similar cost.
Sorry.

I'm with Frank. I still use AA 1.5 almost exclusively. My only wish is that it had the "scrub" or shuttle wheel feature of 2.0, but even that wasn't worth the headache that came with upgrading. _________________ Great Voice. Great Choice. For Voice Talking and stuff.

As we are building another video editing suite, we are evaluating our software needs for everyone. I would like to upgrade to AA 3.0 since I am familiar with that process and available tools.
Most of our video editors use Avid and therefore "Protools." I can't justify the extreme cost of necessary plug-ins for Protools.
One of my video editors suggested that I look at Sony Vegas on a laptop as as an audio editor and stand-by video editor.
Can anyone share some insight into Vegas as an audio tool? Can anyone compare the learning curve to AA?
Thanks,

i bought sony vegas primarily to edit video on a different computer, and i do like the ease with which various tracks/files can be moved around, shifted, opened, closed, trimmed, and expanded. i notice adobe audition added a few of those conveniences to cooledit pro.
using the plentiful effects in vegas was a little different and i really didn't devote enough time to the learning curve for a fair evaluation...but the program itself was very easy to use. _________________ rowell gormon
