VO-BB - 20 YEARS OLD!

I'm using a 528E but use a separate preamp for my U87AI. I travel often and hope to lighten my load by acquiring a channel strip that offers a better quality preamp than the 528E. The Safe Sound P-1 looks interesting and there are considerable positive comments on it but I couldn't find any reviews from voice actors. I would appreciate any input from somebody who has had experience with this unit and could comment on the quality of the preamp.

From what I've read, every one that uses it for voice or instruments really likes it. They aren't floored by it, but they shouldn't: it's a really nice preamp (no pun intended) with a very transparent but effective compressor and a useful expander for reasonable money. Plus, it's travel-size. I could see buying one as a useful tool/backup/travel rig in the near future.

Here's a taste test Warren did with the P-1 versus a Berhinger, a Speck, and a TF Pro. I believe the P-1 wins this round.

I should add that the P-1 trumps the 528E in many respects. It's a much better preamp, and a much better compressor. The 528E is a ubiquitous tool because it is rock-solid, wards of interference, and is priced to move (for starters). It's an excellent, reliable tool: that's why it gets used! The P-1 just sounds better (and you can travel with it).

I use an P1 on a daily basis for VO for 3 years now....... with hungry beasts such as SM7 and RE 20 without any kind of problems.

I'm more than satisfied with it - beatifull piece of equipment.
