I've got a big job coming up that I know is going to have lots of complicated words along with foreign names, etc... In all my live gigs I always seem to choose the wrong pronunciation so I was wondering if anyone has either some reference books or locations online that they like to use for such things. That is besides the obvious ones such as Dictionary.com. I'd pay for a site or media that has the audio pronunciation if it's really worth it. _________________ Try to imagine a world where there is no such thing as hypothetical situations.

Bob,
You should search the VO-BB database, because I seem to recall an extensive discussion on this. _________________ Brett

Brett,
I did dig a bit into the archives but many were specific requests not an all out HELP ME on pronunciations. One link sounded very promising, the http://names.voa.gov/ but that link seems to go no where. Bummer! _________________ Try to imagine a world where there is no such thing as hypothetical situations.

Bob,
Went on a search and found this prior post:
Quote: | Forgive me if this is old news. There is a web site for the American Heritage Dictionary that allows you to hear words pronounced. Look up the word, click the speaker and listen. With respect to my UK friends, I typed "aluminum" and my computer locked up. [ba da dboom..I'm here 'til midnight]

My bain in this case is proper names.
I DID find a couple books upstairs (a book in a library, who would have thought?)
I miss the most obvious things, like how I work in this big building full of books. You would think I should already know how to pronounce
Abú Rayhan Muhammad ibn Ahmad al-Biruni
or
Antony van Leeuwenhoek
or
Apuleius and Pudentilla _________________ Try to imagine a world where there is no such thing as hypothetical situations.

bob- a while back i called on npr for pronunciation help, since they have audio files to beat the band at npr.org. i had an audition with many, many middle eastern proper names, and many of them made the news so ... i was able to listen to bits of newscasts and longform at npr and figured THEY know how to pronounce them. it worked.
didn't get the gig but by god i was their second choice!
and here: http://names.voa.gov/index.cfm
the voice of america is in my bookmarks but they have no audio file of my last name's pronunciation, in case you were wondering. _________________ sitting at #8, though not as present as I'd like to be. Hello!

Diane,
Your name wasn't in my books either!
Unfortunately many of the names aren't anywhere to be found, like Troitse-Sergiyev Lavra.
I'll have to give NPR a call! _________________ Try to imagine a world where there is no such thing as hypothetical situations.
