Caryn,

I have to admit that it took me a few days before I mustered up the gumption to try the neti-pot once I bought it. After the first time though, I was amazed at how refreshed I felt. A couple of words of warning though: if you buy sea salt, use ONLY about a 1/4 tsp per cup of water. And NEVER swallow when you're doing the cleansing, keep your mouth open all the time. After a few tries you do get the hang of it, but it is weird at first. Reminded me of when I took swim lessons as a kid.

My neti pot's been sitting in the rarely visited things-that-don't-quite-belong-anywhere draw and would only come out when I caught a cold (yeah, defeats the object, I know). So last week I moved it into the studio with the intention of giving my (generously spacious) nasal cavities a rinse every morning. Of course, it just sat there unused for a few days, so whatever deity happened to be checking in on me at that moment struck me down with a nasty little cold. I'm sitting here now with nary a voice.

And yeah, sea salt is a definite. Regular salt will just season your nose with a delicious coctail of chemicals.

Have you considered that after 3 days you just got better?

Um,,,,no. I don't know about you, but my colds last 2 weeks. First week is the stuffy "I hab a coldt" stage, second week is the gagging and spewing stage. That's when the neti pot comes in handy. I don't know what I'd do without it during cold/allergy season.

Ok, I can't handle this any more. Please forgive me for rattling on and yes, check with your physician/health care provider before following my advice.

Hydrogen Peroxide:
In the USA, it comes off the shelf in a 3% solution and states on the label that one of the intended uses is as an "Oral Debriding Agent", i.e. as disinfectant to cleanse your mouth. The directions recommend diluting by 1/2, gargling and/or swishing it around for a minute and spitting it out (DON'T SWALLOW OR YOU'LL HEAVE!). I've done so with the full 3% for 14 years (umm.. swishing and gargling, not heaving). No, it doesn't taste good ... but it's kinda fun to foam at the mouth. Wink but it does kill the bacteria that cause bad breath AND it restore oxygen to the tissues that line your mouth, which are different construction than most other parts of you and thereby helps you heal from injuries and surgeries better as well (consult your oral surgeon).

Note: For our UK friends, you have to request it at the pharmacy. It's not on the shelves. And, it comes in a 6% solution, not 3% so you need to dilute accordingly.

Gargling (NOT swallowing) heavily salted water also kills bacteria in the back of your throat. It's kinda cool because it actually throws off the osmotic balance of the bacteria and literally makes them explode! (no, you won't see or feel the exploding bacteria... but it's a good visual!)

Airborne is a nutritional supplement that aides the immune system. That's why it says to take it at the onset of a cold/flu. Ideally, you should start taking it as soon as flu season comes around and/or you have lots of contact with other folks. (Or if you have little ones that do ... ie, daycare). This way the immune system is READY when you're exposed, not just mustering up an army when it's overrun. "Let's build an army after the enemy has overrun us and taken over the capital. ... NOT!!" ... although it doesn't hurt to send in some reinforcements.

Nettipot - Just Do It!!

Tums = Calcium: NOT! The makers of Tums can get away with advertising that their product contains calcium because it does. However, for our bodies to assimilate Calcium to any degree requires a highly acidic environment. So tell me, what's Tums used for? ANT-ACID. So you don't actually get much, if any, of the calcium it contains to where your body needs it. It's a farce.

Magnesium - Our bones are used as a storage depot for calcium. Magnesium is used by the body as a part of the chemical reaction to release and also to re-store the calcium from/to the bones. Yes, calcium is a part of the bone structure. It's also released into the blood stream from the bones for use by the nervous system and for muscles to function. Sometimes we have plenty of calcium but just not enough magnesium for the necessary reactions to take place. The effects of proper balance of calcium/magnesium are: calming effect (full out body wide), better sleep, reduced/eliminated cramps, twitches, tremors (or at least to the degree that this was the full problem ... can have other things going on as well at the same time that won't be addressed by supplementation).

*Whump!!!* {me falling off my soapbox}

True dat!

My dog ate aabout 5 boxes of Junior mints one evening while we were out. When we called the hospital, they said to give her 3 teaspoons of Hydrogen peroxide. Worked great. The dog threw up all night all over the tiled bathroom floor. If you've never smelled minty fresh dog vomit before, it's a surreal experience.

I had a Doberman once that drank a quart of white latex paint. Vet said same thing (but more of it). Three hours and one Laurence Welk show's worth of white, fluffy bubbles and lather later, doggy was fine. A bit bewildered and spotted like a negative of a dalmatian, but fine. Wink I think the minty fresh would have been a nice touch. heheh.

I started the Neti pot thing not long ago, but have only had mixed results. It seems to work all right immediately after a rinse, but then things often swell up and nearly close off again within 15-20 minutes. I'm starting to think it might be a sinus infection. Grrr...

For over a year, I had to use a decongestant before going to bed every night and sometimes during the day as well. I spoke to my doctor and she told me it's very common in NJ!?! At any rate, I started using a saline nasal flush similar to a neti pot in the mornings and in the evenings and I haven't had to use the nasal decongestant for going on 2 months now. It just works people. Try it, you'll get past the icky part in 2 or 3 sessions and then you'll be thankful you just did it.

You don't actually have to LOOK at the stuff you're lavaging out of your nasal passages; I don't. I close my eyes and think of England.

Boiron Homeopathics - OSCILLOCOCCINUM

at first signs of symptoms..

seems to work for me.

If i get really stuffy: Boil a pan of water, throw in Eucalyptus oil, and inhale the steam as hot as you can withstand. Usually throw a towel over my head and get a facial while i'm at it. Usually clears them nasal passages right out, but you gotta be careful so you don't burn yourself.

hmm.... OSCILLOCOCCINUM is a homeopathic "nosode". It's a bacteria made into something benign so the body responds to the energetic signature and produces a specific anti-body to it. In this way it's similar to how a vaccine works except that there are no longer even the dead bodies of the bacteria in the nosode. Nosodes, to be effective, must be taken BEFORE the body contracts the disease/bacteria (before the symptoms show). After the body has contracted the bacteria, there are a different set of procedures/remedies.

Eucalyptus oil actually neutralizes the oscillococcinum, so don't use the two together. This is also true of mint, menthol, camphor and coffee (it's the bean, not the caffeine). In fact, these last four neutralize almost all homeopathics. (even if it's just in your toothpaste or minty fresh gum).
High heat and radiation (microwaves, CRTs, etc.) also neutralize most homeopathics.
