When cheapskates try to dangle the possibility of "lots more work like this" to secure a discount rate, I always tell them that I am happy to discuss discounts for bulk buys, provided there is a contractual commitment to the minimum quantity of bookings that will be forthcoming. Strangely, I never seem to hear from them again!
And another thing. If I had a Pound/Dollar for every call that begins "Now, our budget's a bit tight on this one...." I'd have retired to the sunshine long ago. Why does the fact that they've screwed up their budgeting become MY problem?! I have one charming female colleague who is very good at stopping them in their tracks at that stage by saying, in her most smiley, matter-of-fact voice: "I'm afraid the size of your budget has no bearing on my fee". She does it with such an undertone of "surely you can't be so stupid as to have thought the two were in any way related?" that they quite often roll over. _________________ Charles Nove

I hear that all the time as a writer -- they never have budgeted in enough for script writing. If I HAD a a buck for every time I've heard variants on: "well, we've overspent our budget on special effects, director's fees, parties at the studio, etc., and we still don't have a great script, so would you mind accepting a nickel to write our half-hour documentary and save our asses on this project?" I'd be wealthy, too.
I don't book those projects anymore. The one time I did, it was so much work and so much hassle that it was painful to participate.
My partner does soundtrack work and yesterday we got a call from someone who had asked us to bid on a project. We put together a carefully thought-out bid and sent it in. Heard nothing until yesterday, then they said, in essence, well, the producer has a friend of a friend who has a studio in his house and he's agreed to do the audio for free.
And this on a project where the video production is going to cost a bundle. Never fails to amaze me; bundles of money for video but a couple of bucks for sound and a script that they didn't want to mess with until they were well into the project.
I hate to see it happening to VO as well... _________________ Charter Member: Threadjackers Local 420 |

Just the icing on the cake, especially since once you find out you're probably expected to translate them ALL you'll want no part of it |

They wasted some time that was very valuable to you and your partner. How about this ... you charge a $50 fee to come up with the bid for them. The fee is credited to the gig if you a) hear from them within a certain time frame and b) they decide to use your services for the specified project.
For crying out loud, professionals in many other areas do this, why not us? It cuts down on those that are just looky-loos. If your plummer can do it, so can you. _________________ ~James

Yeah, you're right. We should charge an aggravation fee for bids (but call it "materials fee" or something).
As for the cheap-*** VO and translation ad -- I wonder what kind of translation they're expecting for that kind of money; probably not broadcast spanish... _________________ Charter Member: Threadjackers Local 420 |

Dear Sir,
Thank you for your generous offer. I must admit I was pleased to see that you are offering nearly double my usual rate, but at this time I find myself in a difficult situation. You see, my dead grandmother needs an operation so she can compete in the motocross freestyle competition this weekend. I'm sure you understand what I'm telling you.
Please feel free to contact me at your earliest opportunity if those vestigial cells ever turn into a functioning brain.
