I've posted an initial prototype for the VO Database web site that I announced in the Chat forum a few weeks back.
http://www.vodatabase.com/prototype/
I'd love to hear thoughts on pretty much everything. There's still a little formatting cleanup I want to do, but I'm pretty happy with this stage of development overall. Rip it up! _________________ Justin S. Barrett

Justin... The site looks like it could become very interesting.
One thing... it may be just me...
When I first clicked on the link... and it opened... the object in the upper left corner reminded me of a salt shaker. Maybe it was the position of the mic, and maybe it was because not enough of the mic was showing to convince me it was a mic.
But the content of the site looks very promising. _________________ "Bailey"

Thanks for the comments! I'm a little embarrassed to say that I just took a look at it for the first time in IE, and the layout is ...uh...a little broken. I've been doing all development on my Mac laptop, only checking the look in Firefox and Safari, and it looked fine in those so I didn't think IE would present such a problem. Should've known better...
Bailey: I appreciate your comments on the mic. It's a shot I snapped of my AKG Perception 400, and while the original image does show more of the mic, I was trying to crop out the shock mount for the site header. I'll try a version where it's scaled a little smaller, leaving the shock mount in view. _________________ Justin S. Barrett

Interesting that none of us thought of looking at it in IE.... _________________ Elaine

Looks very clean and neat; I like that you have the "newbie" area named "Learn" because, to be honest, I've read so many times on here from folks saying they've learned something new, even though they've been in the business a while. So maybe lots of people will look under "learn" even if they aren't total newbies...
I'm sort of a mid-level newbie; have directed lots of VO, done some VO, but until recently hadn't considered doing more of it. So, in some sense, I, too, learn every time I open up this forum. I look forward to learning more in your DB.
Nice work! _________________ Charter Member: Threadjackers Local 420 |

I've fixed the most glaring error in IE, but still need to tackle a minor issue w/ the header. Re: the mic, it turns out that none of my photos show as much of the shock mount as I thought they did, so I'll have to take some new shots. Hope to have that ironed out by the weekend and start working on the database.
Thanks again to all for the feedback! _________________ Justin S. Barrett

Yeah... me too! Heck, if the people visiting the site can't figure that out I suspect the content may be a little over their heads as well. _________________ . If at first you don't succeed, then bomb disposal probably isn't for you. |

justin--you've got one too many 'than's in the second sentence of your Welcome page.

Justin,
This is looking great. I did notice that it doesn't seem possible to get back to the welcome screen once you navigate away from it, except with the "back" button. I don't know if that's significant or not.
Please let me know and when I can be of service to you. And thank you very much for including my blog as one of your links. _________________ Be well,

Diane: Thanks for catching that. Fixed!
Bob: I thought about that issue myself, but I'm not sure that I want to resolve it. In the final version, the only thing I might add to that welcome info is perhaps an indicator of how many new entries have been added in a given day/week. Aside from that, I don't really plan on putting any useful information on that page. The site is meant to be navigated through the menu on the left, with the welcome page simply acting as the slightly-more-verbose equivalent of your neighborhood Wal Mart greeter.
I appreciate the additional feedback on the mic. While somewhat shaker-like, I'm kinda partial to the current version. In trying an alternate version last night with the whole thing scaled down to show more of the shock mount (missing pieces aside), it just didn't feel like it filled the space as well. The big solid shape of the current version feels better to me than the capsule-in-a-spider-web look of the combined mic and mount. I might still experiment w/ a scaled down version at some point, but I'll likely leave it for now so I can work on the guts of the system. _________________ Justin S. Barrett
