I don't think she should be surprised by that. _________________ We have nothing to fear but fear itself.

Hey, we've ALL been pissed off at clients, I get that, but to PUBLICLY make fun of them is just asking for trouble.
I feel really bad for her because I'm sure it was a big part of her "brand" to be the "Voice of the Tube"... but still....
I'm sure she'll be fine...but it sure is a "Lesson Learned" for ME!

That's sad...I hope they take her back.
I've done several interviews for papers, etc back in the radio days...and it always surprised me how often things were taken out of context. Not always- but it did happen. _________________ Threadjackers local 420

Wow...if that's true, that's really too bad. It can be fascinating sometimes to compare what was actually said to what was reported. It's like a horrible horrible game of "telephone" played as a kid.
People just kind of hear what they want to hear, and sometimes it doesn't matter what was actually said. _________________ We have nothing to fear but fear itself.

If you can't handle hearing your own voice in public, don't get into voiceovers, sister. (DISCLAIMER: JUST KIDDING!!!) Still, there seems to be a raw deal afoot. Instead of sacking her, wouldn't this be a prime PR opportunity for the tube to trot Emma out to the press and say "I was taken out of context, the tube is marvelous, ehctuelly".
Could this have been the source of the controversy?

Supposedly the Mail on Sunday broke the 'story'. 'Nuff said. _________________ Skype: globalvoiceover

I know Emma and am prepared to lay a good deal of money on her being quoted out of context. I have been in the position of being on the phone and having to listen to myself and I quite agree, it is a very weird and somehow quite uncomfortable experience. I would suggest in her defence that Emma was perhaps being rather 'British' and did not wish to be seen to be revelling in what a journalist may have been suggesting namely that, isn't it fabulous to travel on the tube and to hear your voice.
Apart from anything else, Emma live 200+ miles from London and why should she be familiar with and happy to travel on the tube.
Unless you do it every day and are inured to the commuting grind then its a fairly hellish experience......and of course, each persons experience is relative. I did it for years and as far as I am concerned its best avoided whenever possible, certainly after sections of our community decided to detonate bombs on it.
The journalists reporting this story seem to suggest that Emma set up a website with the sole purpose of making spoof announcements against London Underground. They were only part of a comedy section of her promo site.
The comments about Americans are simply a joke about stereotypes.
Emma is one of the most popular FVOs in the UK and if you read her comments, she was saying she wouldn't like to be trapped in a tube with people forced to listen to her, not that she couldn't handle hearing her own voice in public. _________________ www.davidmonteath.com

Hey David!
I was wondering whether you or Banksey knew her!
Getting mis-quoted just blows, which is why I put the second link up as soon as I saw it.
I hope it all works itself out.

David, thank you for your insight into the matter. I can sympathize with what Emma is saying. Just because one devotes one's life to a inherently public endeavour doesn't mean that one needs to lead one's private life as a confident extrovert. If she feels creeped-out, fair enough. I had the pleasure of living in Scotland for a few years ('88-'93) and rode the Tube, and endured bomb scares, so I appreciate the valid points you're making about the Tube experience. Mass Transit ain't for everybody.
I now will run off to place a smiley icon next to my snide remark. I only meant it to be a 3.5 on the Snide-Ritcher Scale. I went a bit over on that. Sorry.
So far I can't see any evidence of her criticizing The Tube, especially since no offense was officially taken at her comic pieces which seem to be quite funny and good natured. _________________ Skype: globalvoiceover

Hi Liz
I did notice that and thank you. I get remarkably p*ssed offwhen journalists are so sloppy and unprofessional and offer no right of reply.
It was hardly a serious in-depth interview after all where do you find questions like 'Do you ever go to the tube station and mime to the announcements with a cap on the floor and a little dog curled up in a coat?
Lance, I'm sorry, I was on a knee-jerk against the press and you just caught a bit of it,
I agree, I can see no criticism at all, just some spoof announcements, and I am sure we have all done them even if only in our heads.
Peace and love to all _________________ www.davidmonteath.com
