there's a studio... well actually - this is right across the street from my studio:
Fox5 coverage
and
NJ.com coverage

As I got off of the PATH train and walked toward my studio my heart skipped :10 or maybe :30 because I thought it was MY building.

Thanksgiving is indeed every day.

PEACE.

Anthony,

I saw that on the news today. I'm sorry it had to happen to anybody but Thank God it wasn't you. That had to be one of the worst feelings not knowing.

Hey Tony,

I'm glad you didn't get burned on that one. I know Jersey City can be Hot sometimes.

I knew your tracks were smokin'...but not literally! That does sound too close for comfort. I bet the home studio is looking better all the time to you now, huh?

Be safe, man.

thanks for the nice vibes, peeps! today was so surreal - time stood still somehow.

When lunch time came around (around 2PM or so for me), I ordered something from the local pizza shop down the street (Helen's). The guy calls me about 30 minutes later and says, "Anthony, I can't get in. The cops won't let me." I asked, "What do you mean? The streets not closed to pedestrians - only cars." He replied, "Uh, no. Come down and see." My studio is in the rear overlooking a parking lot, so when I went downstairs and opened the front door this GIGANTIC excavator-like construction machine was sitting in the middle of the street! It freaked me out - our street's not that wide and it felt like this thing was about to swallow me up. One of the demo crew saw me coming out and seemed shock, "Hey, hey, hey! You can't be out here - either get back in your apartment [apartment?] or move down the block." I said, "I'm just gonna get my pizza - I'll be right back."

I walked down the block and met the delivery guy then ran back to my studio. As I walked up to the 2nd Floor I realized, "Damn - all the stores were empty - am I the only one here?" I walked to the front office and all of a sudden the big excavator turned on. When it moved around, I swear I could reach out and touch it from the fire escape. At that moment, with my lunch in my hand I said (literally), "I better get the f* outta here! It seems like this is too close for comfort for what's about to go down. But how the heck am I gonna get out?! I don't want any debris from the demo falling on me!" I risked it and ran out (not before turning on the alarm and, like an idiot, taking my time to shut down the studio equipment) and continued to run past the cops and demo crew to move behind the barricades they set up to establish the "safe zone."

At that point, there's a crowd of people waiting to see the demo of the building. In that crowd I find my downstairs business neighbors and I asked them, "Yo - did they tell you guys to evacuate?" They said, "YUP! They told everyone to get out - you were the only one there." I almost fainted - but I didn't wanna drop my pizza. Instead I said, under my breath, "That bastard demo crew guy wanted me dead!" LOL

Anyway - here are some pics:
This is what I saw as I exited the PATH train this morning and walked up my block

This was snapped right before I opened the front door this morning

These next few were taken while holding my lunch in my hand

And this last one was taken from the street behind my street (in the parking lot)

I wonder if they'll let me back in tomorrow?

PEACE.
-Anthony

EDIT: btw - the guy that was operating that big-ass machine was like a surgeon!!! I thought he would bang away at the building but he made it look easy - almost like he was caressing the building apart - it was an amazing sight - he must be paid da BIG bucks! (And worth it because there was fear of the adjacent building walls coming down).

Wow Anthony,

That was close. Only 1 number off! As Get Smart would say . . .

Missed it by that much!

Was your studio affected at all by any of the smoke or the big-ass machine or anything?

See? I told you you should start working from home!

A little sign from above?

Wow. Just another day in the city, huh? It's only in times like this that I think insurance rocks.

But, what about the PIZZA, man? What did the pizza look like?

Yup - there have been quite a few signs these past two weeks - soooo we've already starting the process: ISDN and POTS have been requested, cleaning the space this weekend, and unloaded most of my "extra" gear. Daddy's comin' home for Christmas, kiddies!

Here's what it looked like this morning (these guys cleaned up an entire building in one day and I can't even get my bedroom in order over an entire weekend LOL):

Does anyone remember the "new jewelry store" pic? Same view from the front office window

Truly a sight to behold! Joe - my studio was not affected but the front office does smell like smoke (especially the staircase). the construction/demo machines can't be heard in the studio not to mention in the booth (lucky me) - although every once in a while today I felt a slight rumble in the floor whenever they knocked loose the rest of that roof and some of the side walls but still not heard "on tape."

G'night. It's been a long two days.

PEACE.

Having a problem getting a room cleared up quickly? Just call one of those guys with the machine. They'll have it done in a New York minute...maybe less.

Congrats on the upcoming move! Your gonna love not doing the commute everyday.
