Hey gear heads!

As you may (or may not!) remember, back in October, DHL lost my laptop.
Before I shipped it though, I took out the HD
DELL replaced the laptop with the one I have now, but I was wondering whether there was a way I could use the old laptop's HD as an external hard drive.

I've see "enclosures" for hard drives, but I think those are for HDs that go into desktops.

Does anyone know if such an enclosure exists for a Laptop HD?

Thanks!

Liz

Hey Liz,

If you're looking for speedy performance, buy a dedicated external drive (or a desktop drive and a desktop drive enclosure).

If you just want to use the drive you have, and you're not worried about high-performance, a few of what you're looking for are available on NewEgg!

Thnanks Bret!
I'm not really concerned with performance in this instance.
I just want to use it for storage..it just seems a shame to scrap a 60gig HD if I can still use it!

But is the HD that I have from my Laptop, compatible with these enclosures?

What do I have to look for to make sure it works?

Liz

Get a little housing for it and you can turn it into an external Fire Wire or USB drive. Way simple— talk to your local computer guys.

If you don't have a local computer guy, you're looking for an external drive case that will work with a PC.

fixed a typo

THAT'S what I needed to know.
I guess the HD I have WILL work with the IDE 3.5 enclosures then?
I just wasn't sure whether a Laptop HD was different than a desktop HD.

EDIT:
OOPS...now that I look at Bret's link those ate 2.5" enclosures...I'll go look at what I've got....

Thanks!

Liz

Yes, you most likely need the 2.5 inch ones. Here's one. Link provided merely for informational purposes. I've never done business with this company and know nothing about them.

What a great device! Thanks, all for the "bone".

And, I'll share that I was so excited about getting one of these--to use with a laptop drive that I had replaced some years ago--until it occurred to me that the reason I replaced the drive was because it had failed (SFX: gong).

Liz,

Any of the 2.5" enclosures that have an internal IDE (Not SATA) interface will work for you. You probably can find one of them at your local Best Buy or CompUSA if you'd rather actually look at the unit before you buy it.
