my perspective is this: after that ancestry.com fiasco (who of the hundreds got the job ... and who DIDN'T get the audition??), i realized i'm just not gonna play. that is, after all the pissing matches that go on, the lowballing, and the fact that seemingly just because everyone else is doing it i ought to also, i'm not.

each person's choice is his or her choice. but i don't necessarily support that business model so i choose not to do business there. i can name off a few other actual bricks-n-mortar and/or products about which i feel the same way (why won't land o'lakes eschew BgH??).

but i wish all the luck and good fortune and great things to those who use the P2P sites. and caryn, that's excellent news. hope you don't feel put out or on the defensive about this discussion; it's not the first here and i suspect won't be the last.

holy crap, this isn't in the entre nous section ?!

As it was my post that got things started and it would appear people have latched on to my mentioning P2P sites, lets look again at what I wrote, it was quite specific. Indeed, it was a separate paragraph.

Philip Banks wrote:

Which part of the above do people disagree/agree with?

Banksey, I often... actually, more often than not, quote my rate to the clients on the P2P sites. They rarely quote a fixed rate.

And, Diane, I agree with Tom as well. Fostering other relationships is also something I've done and will continue to do. However, the majority of my business comes from P2P sites, at the moment.

PS: I totally agree and wish this were in the Entre Nous section.

That's why I never signed up. I just couldn't get my brain around a business model that considers the non paying 'seekers' to be their real clients while the people who actually pay them are ..... what??

I agree with Philip in that respect. If you are paying someone for a service - as the talent is doing on these sites - then the TALENT is the client and the business model needs to be built around that premise. Not the other way around.

yes Melissa, I often wondered about that business model. If I hire an attorney, I expect that person to represent ME, not take my money and then represent the other side.

Why?
I don't think this discussion is incendiary.
Besides, if we are going to be industry leaders, let's lead.

Caryn-

Absolutle congrats.

Your rate matched the clients high end rate and your talent sealed the deal.

May all your '08 deals be so successful.

Wow, quite the spirited banter, ay?

I can't speak for any other talent who uses P2P sites, only for myself...

The rate sheet I have painstakingly assembled actually came from the good people of this forum and thanks again for your help. Using it as a guide, I have diligently "stuck to my guns" when accepting or not accepting gigs on V123. I have not stooped, de-spined, or jellified myself in any way. P2P sites should be accepted for what they are. If you don't care for them that's fine, but please don't make sweeping remarks that disparage those who actually do use them in the spirit that they're intended.

No matter how hard we try to maintain the integrity of our business, there will always be clents and talents who undermine it. Did this suddenly begin once P2P sites came into existence? Probably not. I have no control over that, only how I conduct myself and how I treat my clients.

So, I pay for a service to help me find employment. What's wrong with that?

Not a thing!
To me, it was "advertising dollars spent" in my accounting.

This is certainly a spirited discussion, and I enjoy and appreciate Mr. Banks' entry. It's good to stir the pot up a bit. Thank you Philip for a thought-provoking post.

A few years ago I got involved with a local hospital radio station. For those who don't know, hospital radio stations are run by volunteers to provide a service to patients.

After a while I ended up as Chairman of the charity. Having done some research I noticed that no one was listening to the station and that the presenters (DJs) would only turn up, do their shows and then go. Committee work, fundraising and other jobs always ended up been done by the same 2 or 3 people. The same people who insisted on just being DJs then started to complain about the work of the people trying to run the station. The situation got so bad that after a series of phone calls the entire committee resigned, including me. My job was to advise the management of the hospital that with no one to run the station there was no station and so it must close until a new committee was formed or the charity wound up.

A meeting of members was convened and as a courtesy I agreed to Chair it.
The purpose of the meeting was to elect a new commitee from the membership or agree to "shut up shop". Simple as that, two options.

About 80-100 people attended and almost everyone wanted to have their say, thump the table, be outraged, inraged, walk out, lead a mutiny, pick a fight or anything else for that matter. As people tried to raise matters I thanked them and then repeated the following.

"Before you proceed any further as members of Wave Radio you must elect a new committee to run the station or agree that the charity should close for good". If anyone said anything regarding a matter off the agenda I pushed them politely back to the two items. Eventually one man agreed to stand as Chairman and others asked to be elected to other posts and I left the meeting.

Long story? Dull story? Pointless story? No. Think about it. The hardest things in the world is to do are :-

To get a person to answer a specific question.
To get yourself to phrase a question so specific that there is no way out.
To keep on asking the same question again and again until you get the answer.
To stay focused and refuse to be drawn into irrelevant discussions.
To get other people to stay focused.

How do you control a room full of angry people? Obvious! Just be a great as me Laugh
