As they said on South Park..."Real guitars are for old people". I tried Guitar Hero once. My children went into laughter induced seizures watching me. Not a pretty sight.

It's worse at first if you really DO know how to play.

I played for the first time evah a couple days ago with some friends who have been talking about it for a while. That thing is addicting! We're having a get-together over there tomorrow and the kids are going to have a hoot watching us. They also apparently got "Rock Band" or whatever the other one is called.
There's also a game of some kind on tv or something, but who cares about that?

If you like karaoke, there's also a game called Singstar... simlar concept to Guitar Hero, just with a mic instead of guitar. Someone mentioned Rock Band... that also has a singing option, plus drums and bass... I'll bet that would be great for a New Years party.
