philip, i do believe i know the perfect person to write the forward to your book
(hint: pretentious, moi?)
indeed your offerings about the hospital radio station are excellent. i was witness to a husband asking his wife (in what i deem to be a horribly awful union) "where's my coffee cup?" and she said "it had ash in it" at which point he repeated the Q, she repeated the A, and for the third time he said "but ... where IS it?" and she said "it had ash in it. so i dumped the coffee and put the cup in the dishwasher."
points here:
answer the actual questions
don't pick up after your spouse (read: don't do what is not yours to do)
as for the wishing for the entre nous section, i said that merely because i named out loud a client. but it's not like every single person on this board didn't get that same audition or (with hope) regard it as a fiasco, also. _________________ sitting at #8, though not as present as I'd like to be. Philip, that reminds me of my old Help Desk days. When we would get a cranky client on the phone (actually, when did we not get a cranky client on the phone...), the best way to keep them on track was to keep asking exactly the same question over and over until they finally calmed down and answered it. It was quite amazing how well the tactic worked. _________________ Elaine

Philip,
Your note about the radio station brought back some not-so-fond memories of a board I once sat on for a professional society. I was continually astonished at the arguments, lack of logic, and sheer gall some of the other members would exhibit during meetings. It opened my eyes to the real meaning of the word "agenda."

I always enjoy hearing opinions and success stories from the more successful in our business. They are sharing how they got there. You may not agree with or be able to put into practice everything they say, but there is so much to glean from their offerings. The motivation one can take from these missives is immeasurable.
Thank you, Philip.

A few months ago, in my case.
"Lookit, Sybille," I admonished my on-screen agent. "I no longer want to scurry about to audition for every bit part in television commercials. Get me in on reads only for real acting parts; you know, with some juice to them."
"I've decided, Michelle," I then advised my Voice agent, "That I'm done with
all those silly auditions for little furniture store ads and those three-line film dubbings. I've done lots. Just send them the tapes and call me if they hire me."
I said it all with a happy smile and rigid vertebrae.
In the time since, I've only heard from Sybille and Michelle regarding the agency Christmas parties.
In fact, had it not been for residuals from small jobs of long ago, and monies from the seven voice sites at which I play, I'd be facing a return to the real world.
Pride, yes.
Hubris, no.
There's a filament-thin line.
(Both parties were hum-dingers, by the way.) |

Phillip, I loved your post. I have "The Year of the Spine" in big letters up on a bulletin board in my studio, and I'm reading a book by Barbara Stanny on "Overcoming Underearning"...highly recommended. My agent and voice coach have been telling me for awhile that I'm not asking enough for my work, so this year I'm making a change. I have new demos produced by someone other than me...a first. And I'm re-branding myself with a new Website and marketing materials that will go out in January. It's time for all of us to value what we do, and ask to be paid well for it. Not everyone can do this, it's so much more than making noise with your mouth, and it requires talent. Talented people get paid well...Period.
Happy 2008 everyone! _________________ Enjoy life, this is not a rehearsal.

Actually the new demo and re-branding happen in February...but the book just happened to catch my eye the day after Christmas and has some good, useful exercises. The premise of the book definitely applies to me so far in the voiceover business. |

I'd like to share one small way in which today I took up the challenge issued by Mr. Banks this year. Very small, but significant in its own way, at least for me.
This evening I received an email from someone who found me through my listing on Voices.com. They were looking for a short (40 second) narration in the "movie trailer" style to use on their web site. They said they needed it done this weekend and that their budget was $100.00.
I know some of you think I'm some kind of great success, but I will admit in the past, if someone sent me a note like this, I'd often respond and pick up the quick hundred. Today I decided it was time to add a bit of spine to the equation.
Here, quoted in toto was my response:
| Quote: | | Thank you for your message. Yes, I have time available this weekend. However, my minimum fee is $350.00. If you wish to proceed at that rate, send me the script and place a 50% deposit ($175.00) in my PayPal account ( bob@bobsouer.com). The remaining 50% will be due upon deliver of the finished audio. Otherwise, I wish you well in your search for a cheaper voice. |

Brian,
Thank you. I'm so very glad I've had the privilege of not only meeting you here, but being your friend in the non-cyber world, too. _________________ Be well,

I'm not working weekends starting now unless the pay is insanely great. Not working for OTHER FOLKS, I mean.
My own projects get full attention, and even those need to make room for domestic necessities.
