next week is our monthly debate club. core group of 5-7 of us meet at the same place and discuss the topic we'd decided upon the previous month. we must be prepared to argue either side. it's political, but forces us to bone up on various perspectives and not skewer each other because we accept that we're debating, not evangelizing (as it were).

it helps, too, that we eat lots of food everyone contributes, and we open the discussion with the latest gossip.

next week we talk gun control and the 2nd amendment. this was inspired by a court decision that the district of columbia may not ban citizen ownership of handguns

Hmmm... I like the rule. Sometimes I get pretty passionate about my political views, and you're right, it's best not to express them here.

That sounds like an interesting group, 'pinto! I bet lots of good debate happens.

On a side note, I've learned to be very cautious expressing my views in public anyway. It's bad for business as you never know when you might upset a potential client.

My father always told me not to talk about politics or religion. He said it wouldn't be a discussion and no one is going to chance their mind anyways. He also said never tell anyone any of your business especially how much money you make. My grandfather also told me "keep your friends close but keep your enemies closer." Did I mention my family is from Sicily. Oops I wasn't supposed to tell you that.

Chrissy,

Apparently my family is from the Sicilian part of Ireland. My folks told me the same things. Smile

I've said in a few gatherings over the past year that none of the Presidential candidates was very inspiring, which surveys support, but I see enough frowns when I say it that I don't say it anymore.

I thought at first that being a "faceless" "freelancer" might afford me the leeway to not muffle my political views....but I really knew better.

It really is true that potential clients are everywhere and therefore spouting off politically can be hazardous to your wealth.

However I do wholeheartedly proclaim my undying allegiance to KENTUCKY WILDCAT BASKETBALL!!!

......I believe that sometimes you can get away with a client/prospect etc. suspecting you might be of a different political persuasion. It's when you broadcast it that the trouble starts.

Besides, I have a certain amount of empathy for all but the most radical political views.

After all, my views have certainly changed/evolved etc. over the years!

My high school debate topic of 1977...

I can't even remember what the other topics were other years.

Something about the youth in Asia????
