Listening to your attitude one. You've got that "balls" voice nailed. I'm jealous. It kept my attention, not too long. Why haven't you created some separate imaging demos? Plenty of stations are still looking for "that big voice guy" and you fit the bill. (I'm going to send you an email on this as soon as I finish writing). I'd definitely do a rock one specifically for starters.
I'd like to hear a liner or two with a bit more smart-aleckiness in it. The "when we hear any competition" line is good but give me something more. The rest is nitpicky. Sure you could vary the pace of some stuff blah blah, but that really should be landing you work.
Thanks for sharing with us. _________________ Hart Voice Overs Blog

At the risk of repeating, I listened to your first demo and had a hard time knowing when one spot began and another ended. As Bob Souer once advised me, if you're recording all these spots in one day, try recording them on different days. You'll get very subtle differences which will help set them apart from each other.
You have a great voice, my friend. I'd just like to hear you vary it some more.
Your critique request seems to have gotten lost in the deluge of friendly welcomes. Thanks so much for your patience. You'd be amazed at how uppity some people get when they don't get an immediate reponse to free professional advice. _________________ Jeff

Hi Dave,
Sorry I have not welcomed you aboard "The Board" yet, so here is to a long and wild relations ship with this group.
Just listened to you demo (a.k.a.; natural delivery). Great read! Although it is very similar throughout; with the exception of the last spot, which sold me on your voice - "You had me at the white gravy..."
Move the last spot into the first position; the gravy spot is your money/gravy voice. Create or move some of the spots around to provide some variance in pacing and style and this will be a good income producing demo for you.
I noticed some mouth clicks during the demo which you might want to work on reducing.
Attitude is not your forte’, the production values are high, but too much volume on music and SFX tends to take away from YOUR sound. Producers want to hear YOU, not the music or EFX.
The “The Name of Jesus Tour” spot is right on target. It is your natural delivery with a bit of style. Focus your efforts in this direction for your future "attitude" projects.
I am not going to hold back here, so take this is it is meant – it is not personal. Your definitely a radio guy, and it shows. Characters are also not your forte’. Stick with your “natural delivery” read, add some different styles and some long form narration demos to your list and you will do very well.
Attitude is difficult to deliver unless you have it – I have bunches. You have a good, comfortable, easy to relate to sound which is articulated well – use it.
And, I appreciate that you have given us wild and crazy people here a chance to welcome you into our fold. You will do well… or just go crazy. Which ever suits your fancy.
Toodles
Frank Frederick

Hi Dave,
My first question would be, "What do you want to do with these demos?".
If the answer is, "Get a gig at another contemporary radio station in their production department", I'd say they're quite good for purpose! The first demo is all nicely produced, in-house-sounding spots. Now, if you want to do freelance VO and get ad agencies and production houses interested in you, you need to step back from the mic a bit, lower the compression, and pull back on your own pipes. Cruise voicebank.net 's house reels, really listen to the big talents at the big agencies and see if you can't analyze the differences between their work and yours.
Demo Two shouldn't be called "aggressive" because it's Radio Imaging through and through. Might as well be direct. It's very decent work by the way, and Imaging can be a lucrative arena.
The Character Demo has some very good pieces, because you do back off from the mic on some of them and don't do the radio voice on some. Those are your best. If you want to be hired by folks outside of radio decide which voices an ad agency might really want to hire you for and discard the rest.
You've got talent. It's just pointed mostly in one direction and maybe you want to open yourself up to all those other opportunities too?

Dave,
Having seen this thread pop up to the top again today, and now having read through all of the comments above, I don't have much to add to the discussion; except to point out that you don't have to go to Voicebank.net to hear some of the kinds of examples to which Bruce refers above. Listen to the demos you'll find on Mr. Banks', Mr. Miles', and Mr. Frederick's sites. You'll get the idea.
Let me repeat, though, that you have a very nice voice. This, in itself, will get you almost no voiceover work. (You probably already know that much.) You also have some genuine skill with delivering copy. This will get you a lot of work, assuming you do a decent job of making connections with the people looking for your sound. My best to you. May you experience much success.

Dave... I listened to your demos. Very impressed. Impressed to the point that I'm considering using them on my website... and telling all that it is me.
Ok... not really. But I was impressed.
Welcome to the board... pull up a chair. You can use Robert's, he went to he** ... oops, I forgot. He got a reprieve. Never mind.

Thank you all so much for the welcome... and comments. They're as varied as the Talents who offer them. I really appreciate you taking the time to offer advice.
As I've read through all the posts, it seems that what's considered a strength by one person is considered a weakness by another... which proves that everyone has their own opinion about things... what they like and what they dont... and why. I'm sure that the same holds true for Voice Seekers. I've auditioned for some gigs that I thought I might fit well and didn't get... and some auditions that I just sorta threw out there only to get the gig and hear "You're exactly what we were looking for!" I'm sure you could all give similar examples.
I will certainly consider all these offerings in my constant desire to grow and improve as a Voice Talent and make adjustments to those things that to ring true to me. Thanks again!! _________________ Dave DeAndrea

You're taking the right approach. Just pan through the dirt and you'll find the gold you need. |

Dave-
The only thing I can really offer is a free slate and a hearty welcome! Don't know if that's dirt or gold to you. Bienvenido either way!
