I know I'm a bit late to the party, but when I run into such issues with Windows, I usually do the following:

1. Do not reboot.
Sometimes bugs that are installed can be activated during the next reboot. Unless you are certain you do not have a bug and you have cleared your system, I would avoid a reboot.

2. Toss your cookies.
I clear out the cookies, cache, history, and Temporary Internet Files from IE pretty much every time I use it. I hate the little bugger.

3. Clear the Windows Prefetch folder.
This is located under C;/Windows/Prefetch.
Remove everything in there that you can.
I usually remove everything.

4. Perform a Disk Cleanup on your boot drive.
Open My Computer and right click on your boot drive; usually the C; drive.
Click on Disk Cleanup and let it scan your disk. Remove everything that
you wish. I usually remove everything.

5. Scan for Spy bots. I personally use Ad-Aware, but any Spy bot removal tool should do. Ensure you do not have any Spy bots that are causing the issue. These can cause all sorts of funny issues with your system so get rid of them.

6. Run a system scan with Norton or whatever you are using.

7. If everything is clear, then perform a reboot.

I avoid IE as much as possible and its good that you have Firefox. But with all of the MS a Hobo Tounge

s intertwined its a bit tough to avoid it. Personally I use a Mac and Netscape to do my serious Internet stuff.

Jon, I did a lot of those things automatically then ran a scan before rebooting. Although Prefetch is something new to me. I'll have to take a look.

I generally speaking don't accept cookies in the first place so I don't usually have a problem there. Takes a bit longer to get to a new web page, but I am a bit particular about what I let on my computer.

This is a relatively new computer and I must admit I haven't yet re-installed Ad-Aware. It was on my old computer and it never found anything - again because I am very particular about what I allow to be loaded on the computer.

But that's a good list to follow and I'll definitely keep it in mind for the next time - and we all know there will be a next time Shocked

Good practices are good practices, but let's not get carried away and spread misinformation.

Cookies are almost never dangerous and there's no reason to clear the IE cache every time it's used (unless you have it set to such a low volume that it fills up every time you use it). Other than the cache filling up, about the only reason I've ever come across to have to empty it is for testing dynamic pages as I'm programming, or to reload a page with a new version of a Flash movie, again, for testing purposes.

And FYI, because of the line of work I'm in, spending 5-8 hours per day online (even on weekends) is not uncommon. From the day I first installed Windows 95 until last summer, I never used anti-virus software at home and never had a virus. Not one. In 12 years.

So again, while it's always a good idea to know where to look for issues, let's not get carried away.

Lou - You have a valid point, but I'm not being carried away. It's More like being cautious. Also, this will keep your system running smoothly and avoid the standard bogging down that Windows is known for.
I've been working with computers professionally for over 15 years (last 9 working for the company that shares its initials with Harry Potter) and I have never had a virus or ever had to reinstall an OS (outside of for testing purposes). My practices may be a bit extreme but when it comes to Windows, the more paranoid your are the better,

To really be safe, in my opinion, one should use either Mac OS X, Linux or UNIX when surfing net. But, to each is own.

These are only tips and folks can decide for themselves what is the best course of action to take when issues arise.
