Here's a shot of our house. The one in the middle with the two Chevy Blazers in the driveway. Ours is 2 story where the ones on each side are just one story, hence the size difference.
To give you an overall idea of size, I stood on my tippy-toes to get this shot.

We just moved back to the Sacramento area this week, and have opted to rent for at least the next 6 months while the housing market continues to fall. We left here almost 3 years ago right before the market peaked... a 2200 sq ft home on almost 1/4 acre at that time went for around 475,000... these days I'm guessing it's closer to 375,000 and falling... one of the many reasons we chose to return now. _________________ Chris Rice - Noisemaker

sorry - pic won't post ...
$399k - One story with cathedral ceilings. WATERFRONT. Several outside decks. Two bay boat dock with one lift. Deck on point overseeing water. Tiki bar on one of decks. Very little yard maintenance. Carriage house, tool shed and exercise building are bonuses. Private. ... NOT my house.
my house - nice neighborhood, great school dist. quiet cul-de-sac, 3300 sq ft, koi pond and two dogs ... $185k two years ago --- unfortunately prolly less now. _________________ "i know philip banks": todd ellis

I live in a semi-detached house on a lot that is 18 feet wide and a little over 100 feet deep. This is a small residential street midtown in Toronto. The house is about 1100 sq.ft. - maybe a little less. My neighbour (on the other side of the common wall) recently sold his home for $455,000. It boggles the mind. _________________ Elaine

Bob, Todd.... these very nice homes at less than $100 a square foot just boggles the mind for those of us used to $200 as an average. It's too bad I'm a Westerner through and through, or I'd seriously consider a move that way for a housing and land upgrade.
I will say however that my house tripled in value from 98 to early 07...right place, right time I guess. The bubble bursting has taken a few bucks off the top end, but we're still a warm spot in a cold market.

My house has tripled in value, too but it's no $400,000.
I wouldn't be able to buy a house in my neighborhood now, though.
Heck, I wouldn't be able to buy MY house today.
Here's a place just around the corner: a triple-decker with 6 apartments.
It's the only thing in the $375-$450K price range.
$449,000

Holy Moly... We had an offer of a lot more money than it is really worth for my little shack about six months ago (my neighbor is in real estate) and it is nothing to write home about (ask Courvo).
The only saving grace is the location - my backyard IS the ski resort. You know what they say about real estate pricing: "It's all about location, location, and location".
Living in a "resort" town has it's pluses and it's minuses I guess.

P.S.: I would take a picture but all you would see is white... we have more snow than seen in the picture posted elsewhere on the VO-BB.

Just got my property tax bill— it appears that my house has nearly quadrupled in value.

In Cambrige you'll be lucky to find a decent one bedroom, livingroom, kitchen one bath for that price. That's city living and convenience for you. Location, location, location.

Yeah RIGHT!!!!!!!!!!!
By the way, here in Northern NJ....you'd get what we call "a fixer-upper"....
The house just down the street from us, nice house, but your basic cape...not too small...not huge...just sold for just shy of $500K
It's NOT what I rember thinking a half-a-million-dollar house sould look like!!!!!

Banksey,
You could get a condo for that kind of money in Deer Valley, Utah (another ski resort just up the hill).

I second Liz's 'yea right!' Why am I still in Northern NJ? I'm torn between Phillips Bakery, the log near Todd and Edo, wow, I'm wondering if I can swing a move to Curacao?
There's nothing in my immediate neighborhood near 400k, but about 1/2-3/4 of a mile away you can get a 1 bedroom 1.5 bath condo for $364k
[img]
or this 3BR 1.5Bath on a 50x100 lot for 459,900..[/img]
Like Deebs, no way I could afford to buy my house today. Even with the market tanking recently the prices are insane here. I don't know how first time buyers manage it. |
