Irony in housing, part I:

In Colorado we struggled to buy our first house, which turned out to be a cape cod-style "entry level" house built by Pulte (known for cutting their corners when it came to things like, oh, making sure the ceiling drywall seams were taped properly). Our whole block of new homes looked like New England transplanted to Colorado.

Part II:

Ten years later, we moved to New England and bought a Colorado-style log home surrounded by Cape Cods and salt boxes each on 1/2 acre or more. The log cabin was built by a company that HAS to cut corners (in the logs) to make them fit together properly. We love it! But we miss Colorado big time!

Here's what $400K will get you in the Forney, TX area:

3600 sq ft, 5 br, 3 bath, 1 acre

4000+ sq ft, 4 br, 3 bath, 1.5 acres

If you want Dallas proper, here are a couple samples...

2500 sq ft, 3 br, 3 bath, 0.36 acre

3000 sq ft, 4 br, 3 bath, 0.4 acre

...compared to our place here in Forney (photo taken near the end of construction in 2006):

$130K - 1700 sq ft, 3 br, 2 bath, 0.2-ish acre

2 1/2 years ago we bought our house in Colorado way up in the mountains and in the national forest. its a cedar sided, 3200 sq ft home with a wrap around deck, and a private deck off the 2nd floor master bedroom, on 1 acre of forest property with no neighbors visible and nothing in any direction obscuring the view of the mountain ranges. We paid just under $300,000 and the house was 8 years old at the time.

$400k will get you 1500 square feet or so of very old house in an undesirable neighborhood here. Or half of a nice one-bedroom condo in a "good" neighborhood. The very modest neighborhood with very modest homes where I live now? $600k+ gets you into a fixer-upper.

But you never need to shovel snow, or scrape your windshield.

I'll be right over, as soon as it's warm enough to go outside! (It's 58 degrees here! I can't wait until this bitter winter is over!)

Up heah in Frost Heaves it got up to 60 yesterday and our driveway almost melted. Then it froze overnight and now is melting again.

I see by the WeatherBug that we're due MORE snow tonight.

<sigh>

Diane, your house is super cute!! I LOVE older homes. They are, as you said, full of charm. My hubby, on the other hand, doesn't like the thought of the maintenance.
