I'm way too close to my own stuff to figure out what works and what doesn't...
A minute of your time (and your reaction, good, bad or indifferent, would really be appreciated.)
Listen here:

Doug,
As I said with Bruce Miles' commercial demo, if there's some way to make that better, I sure don't know what it is. Really good work. _________________ Be well,

Hey Doug!
You sound awesome!
So now I have one general "promo demo question"
I noticed that each piece is a piece unto itself, basically a full promo as opposed to what we do in commercial or (obviously) narrtion demos where we give snippets of stuff.
Since I have yet to ventuire into Promo-Demo-Land, is that the way promo demos are done? Full promos, one after the other?
LOVE your sound Doug!

Hello. I'm Dr Party-Pooper.
Ignoring the kind comments of my friends I'll address myself to someone who is much better than the demo I just heard. Doug, show people what you can REALLY do, not what you can get away with.
A lot of demo's are as good as the artist will never be, your promo demo will get you gigs from a producer looking for Mr He'll Do. Fortune favours the brave. 1min 15secs of the MUST HAVE voice please. |

Isaiah, Bob, Lou, Caryn & Liz:
Did I ever mention that you have great taste?
But seriously, thanks for the kind words and for taking the time to listen. And yes, Caryn, at about 1:15 it is a tad long, and I was kinda' hoping that one of the segments would get shot down by enough people to warrant its being removed, but no such luck.
Liz, yeah a couple of the pieces are short enough that I included the full promo (actually, only one...I just went back and listened). In a few other cases, a little editing just makes it sound like a complete promo; I left in the beginning and the end, but removed the tasty nougat-filled center. I tend to like hearing complete thoughts in demos, and always try to edit mine that way. I can't tell you, though, if that's the "right way" to do it. (Understanding, of course, that there is no "right way.")
And finally, Philip.
Philip, Philip, Philip. (Man, talk about a slap and a tickle.)
I don't see you as "Dr. Party-Pooper" at all. With apologies to all above, I'd much rather have someone point out my shortcomings and challenge me to do better than to shower me with 'atta-boys. Your comments are frighteningly insightful, and they lead me right back to where I started this thread with "I'm way too cose to my own work." Look for a PM soon.
Now then, I'm off to search my office for my Philip-to-English dictionary. I know it was here just the other day...where could it be.... _________________ Doug Turkel (tur-KELL)

Not to get into a debate with PB's comments as I do understand his inference but I think each of the cuts WERE strong enough vocally (the must have voices) and HAD to show versatility because in the promo market that's what's called for. Exhibit A is Joe Cipriano who has the "deal or no deal voice" and "the west wing" voice and I'm guessing a few in between.
But in support of PB’s opinion, it’s a length issue and its an order issue. If we look at the order, the length issue may take care of itself.
When I listened to the demo, I studied it for vocal uniqueness and marketability. I eliminated production values from the equation because all were well produced.
Here is how I would order them.
1. Chris Angel
2. Bones
3. Red Hot Chili Peppers
4. Money Gang
5. The Office
6. Brotherhood
7. Return to Flight
8. Disney Channel
Rather than simply parroting that list in a re-edit, I would ask you to decide which type of programming you have success in as a promo voice AND which programming you THINK you’d either have the best shot at working in or that you WANT to work in.
Then look at the list again.
What ever comes in as 6, 7 & 8 on that final list with all the above consideration just got their tiki torches snuffed, was “fired” and will not be going home as the biggest loser.
Then you’ll know your strongest voices and your perfect length. _________________ - Peter
