This message probably fits in the pre-ignore category as it concerns UK voice actor and presenter Mike Hurley. He has just died from a stroke.
While those of us on this side of the pond don't know his work all that much, he was a legend in the UK from all that I can gather. There's a rather lovely video documentary about Mike prepared in 1994 that you can find linked here in the archives.

He was only 59. _________________ Be well,

Summer 1993, Alfasound Studios, Manchester, England. Philip Banks is sat in reception waiting to go into a session. A bearded man emerges from another studio munching a Marks and Spencers salmon sandwich. Richard the recording engineer comes to collect me.
"As you're both voices. Philip Banks this is Mike Hurley, Mike Hurley this is Philip Banks" says Richard. Mike swallows a bite of sandwich and points at me.
"Aaaaaaaaah! Now I've heard of you".
Mike Hurley - voice over, gentleman, braodcaster, husband and father will be missed by many. Testimony to his skill as a voice over HE'S STILL BETTER THAN ME!!!! |

It's sad when one of our tribe leaves us, whether or not we were lucky enough to have met...thanks for the personal story Philip!

My two'pennorth... I worked with Mike about 10 years ago when we were both members of what was laughingly called "The Currys Players" - where a major electrical chain used to get a combination of 4 voice actors in a studio and we all played multiple "real" people, all with different accents, claiming to have saved money on their various products. It was a weekly thing for a while and the best fun. No one took it seriously, even the execs. And Mike was one of the funniest there - a million different accents and ad-libs - one of my favourite jobs ever. It's very sad he's gone. He was a good bloke, a great talent, and a very funny man.

I lived in Scotland '88 through '93 and although I didn't have the pleasure of knowing him, I knew and loved the voice and he inspired me to develop a love for this craft. Thank you... _________________ Skype: globalvoiceover
